BREWERS? STADIUM VOTE GOES BEFORE ASSEMBLY VOTE

WI Gov. Tommy Thompson's administration opened negotiations with
Assembly Democrats yesterday in a "last ditch effort" to gather
enough votes to pass a bill to help finance a new stadium for the
Brewers, according to the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. With the
vote on the financing package scheduled for today, Thompson
agreed "there were not yet enough lawmakers lined up in support
of the measure to pass it." Speaker David Prosser, the measure's
leading advocate, said yesterday if the vote were held that
afternoon, it would have gone down, 45-54. Assembly Majority
Leader Scott Jensen, however, predicted the plan would pass,
although many will have to cast "the most difficult votes of
their careers." Thompson was looking to round up more votes from
Milwaukee County legislators and from other counties in the
stadium taxing district (Rinard & Walters, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL
SENTINEL, 9/27).
