NAMES IN THE NEWS

     JACK MCDOWELL and BILL GATES were dubbed "Losers" in this
week's TIME magazine.  On McDowell: "Just when you thought it was
safe to go back to the ball park, he 'salutes' angry fans" (TIME,
7/31 issue)....The IHL Spiders are seeking a qualified candidate
to be their first official mascot (Spiders)....DEION SANDERS
reported to the Giants yesterday and played against the Marlins
last evening.  At a press conference, Sanders criticized the
Dolphins for not making him an offer.  Sanders: "If you really
want to pursue me, you know my agent is Eugene Parker. Give him a
call."  When asked what the number was, Sanders replied: "Money.
1-800-MONEY" (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 7/25).  In Atlanta, Len Pasquarelli
reports that Marlins GM DAVE DOMBROWSKI tried to trade for
Sanders last week, which could have enabled Marlins/Dolphins
Owner WAYNE HUIZENGA to also sign Sanders to play football
(ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 7/25).
