MEDIA NOTES

     Rance Crain, Chair of Turnstile Publishing Co., publishers
of GOLFWEEK, has announced that Orlando-based Turnstile has
entered into a joint venture with MA-based DML Associates to
develop and produce publications for sports organizations, events
and sponsors (Turnstile)....The Lions have entered into agreement
to have Raycom handle the production of the team's preseason
games, to be broadcast on Detroit's WGPR-TV.  For the first time,
the Lions are responsible for the production, marketing and sales
of their preseason games (Lions)....A Sports Illustrated special
edition commemorating the Rockets' championship is due in local
Houston stores today (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/16)....In Boston, Jack
Craig, who notes that ESPN's 45 1/2 hours of coverage of the
"Extreme Games" kicks off June 24, calls the event "risky
business for the competitors and the cable channel" (BOSTON
GLOBE, 6/18)....Sports Illustrated has hired two senior editors
away from New York Times Magazines:  Jim Herre of GOLF WORLD, who
will oversee SI's "Golf Plus" section, and Mark Godich of GOLF
SHOP OPERATIONS, who will be golf editor of the regular SI.  Both
start July 7.  The move set off speculation that SI parent Time
Inc. has its own golf publishing plans, but SI Publisher Dave
Long "said the only move under consideration is the spinoff of
results/preview sections from the Masters and U.S. Open into
standalone magazines" (AD AGE ONLINE, 6/19)....The BOSTON HERALD
cites rumors that BOSTON GLOBE columnist Dan Shaughnessy will
take a "six-figure job" at SI.  Shaughnessy didn't deny the
rumors on a recent radio interview (BOSTON HERALD, 6/19)....A
recent MEDIAWEEK baseball ratings analysis shows that the
Mariners were one of only three teams with higher ratings this
year than last.  The M's are up 21% over '94, averaging an 8.1
rating and a 26 share (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 6/16).
