NFL private equity policy coming together...Peacock, Prime Video land exclusive NFL games...NBA undaunted by NFL's Christmas Day plans

NFL private equity policy coming together

By Ben Fischer

NFL owners are coalescing around a vision to allow private equity to invest in teams, but final approval of a policy is still at least two months away and may take until the fall, Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

The special committee on ownership policy presented a proposal to the other 27 owners during the NFL annual meeting in Orlando this week, and their tentative outline received less pushback than expected, sources said. As expected, there was no formal action taken.

“They seem very close to sort of outlining an approach, and that approach is something we want to make sure the membership was aligned with,” Goodell said. “I think that’s true, and now we have a lot of work to do to take that approach into reality.”

When Goodell first appointed the committee in August 2023, he said he hoped the group would complete its work by this week’s meetings. Today, he said he feels no urgency to approve a final policy. There are no controlling stakes in NFL teams currently on the market, but experts say several teams would likely seek to sell minority stakes to institutional funds once the policy goes into effect.

“We’re making progress,” Goodell said. “I think there will be some changes maybe as early as May, probably closer to October.”

There is still a meaningful range of potential outcomes on details of the plan, sources said, such as which private equity funds are approved to invest, how much equity they can buy, and how many different teams they invest in. But Chiefs owner and finance committee Chair Clark Hunt, who is also ex officio chairman of the special committee, said “we’re starting to hone our focus.”

Hunt also said the NFL’s structure for private equity will differ from other pro leagues, but maybe not by as much as some preliminary ideas suggested it would. As one example, the NBA allows teams to sell up to 30% of their equity to funds, and each individual fund is capped at owning 20% of a team, with a maximum of investments in five teams per fund.

“I would say that what we’ll end up with will definitely have a focused NFL aspect to it, but certainly we’ve learned a lot from what the other leagues have done and it’s quite possible we’d include much of their thinking in where we end up from a policy standpoint,” Hunt said.

Along with Hunt, the committee consists of Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, Broncos owner Greg Penner and Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

Peacock, Prime Video land exclusive NFL games

Peacock will be the "exclusive platform" for the Eagles opening week game in Brazil, while Amazon's Prime Video has "secured the rights for an exclusive streaming playoff game during the upcoming 2024-25 season." The NFL has been "emboldened" to add more games exclusive to streaming providers by the "strong audience for the Peacock playoff game, coupled with the significant growth for Amazon's 'Thursday Night Football' package." NFL EVP/Media Distribution Hans Schroeder said the league is "more comfortable with taking steps" in the direction of streaming and it is "very meaningful to add" Amazon to the playoff mix (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 3/26).

NBA undaunted by NFL’s Christmas Day plans

By Tom Friend

The NBA, whose Christmas Day ratings dropped to a record low last season while going head-to-head against the NFL, will likely continue to schedule as many as five games across ABC and ESPN on Dec. 25 next season. In response to the NFL changing course and announcing Tuesday it would schedule Christmas games on a Wednesday this year, an NBA source said Tuesday the games still deliver some of the largest audiences of the season and is a long-standing tradition “we know our fans look forward to every year.”

The NBA believes its Christmas Day viewership was down last year due not only to the NFL triple-header but also because only two of the five games were simulcast on ABC/ESPN (also due to an NFL conflict on ESPN). Last year’s best Christmas NBA game, Lakers-Celtics, drew 5 million viewers across ESPN and ABC -- down 18% from the Celtics-Bucks telecast in the same window the previous year -- and was dwarfed by the NFL’s best Christmas matchup, Chiefs-Raiders. That NFL game drew 29.2 million, the largest Christmas NFL number since 1989.

Overall, the NBA's five games last Christmas averaged 2.86 million, behind the previous low of 4.08 million (since the league began televising five games on the holiday). Evan Wasch, the NBA’s EVP/basketball strategy and analytics, has said previously the league makes a concerted effort not to schedule Christmas Day games head-to-head against NFL teams from the same city. For instance, he said the NBA avoids putting a Lakers game on at the same time as a Rams game or a Suns game against a Cardinals game.

Kraft addresses Pats doc, NFLPA report card

Patriots owner Robert Kraft met with reporters today for the first time since “The Dynasty” docuseries was released and "addressed both the series and its most common criticism." Kraft said that he “loved” the first three episodes of the 10-part series, but "took issue with its focus on controversies and its exclusion of certain interview footage." Kraft: "I wish they had focused more on our Super Bowl wins, our 21-game win streak. I felt bad there were players who gave hours and hours of interviews, and they felt only the negativity." The series’ most common criticism was that it "unfairly maligned former head coach Bill Belichick and laid too much blame at his feet for the end of the Patriots’ legendary 20-year run." Kraft in response to that said that he "looks forward to honoring Belichick one day" (BOSTON HERALD, 3/26).

Kraft also addressed the Patriots’ "low marks on their annual NFLPA report card" for the first time today. The Patriots scored low in their treatment of families (F-) for their lack of a gameday daycare, weight room (F) and ownership (D+). Kraft said he was "unaware of how bad that was" and they "have to correct everything." Kraft: "We’ve had a plan that we put in place where we’re committing to a whole new facility adjacent to ours. That has been discussed with the leadership team and a building that will be in excess of $50 million" (BOSTON HERALD, 3/26).

Report: Washington hiring WSU's Chun as AD

The Univ. of Washington is finalizing a six-year deal to hire Washington State AD Pat Chun as the school's new AD, according to sources. The hiring of Chun marks a "swift response to the sudden departure last week of Troy Dannen" to become Nebraska's AD after only six months on the job at UW. Chun has led WSU since Jan. 2018 and has helped "manage the university's future in the aftermath of mass departures from the Pac-12." Chun previously worked for 15 years at Ohio State and his experience in the Big Ten "proved appealing to the Washington brass," as it enters the conference for the 2024-25 school year. His ability to lead an athletic department "during financial challenges was valued, as Washington faces significant stadium debt" (ESPN.com, 3/26).
