Bubba Wallace On How Steve Phelps Informed Him Of Noose

NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace appeared on “The View” this afternoon and talked about receiving the phone call from NASCAR President Steve Phelps to inform him about finding a noose in Wallace’s area of the Talladega garage. Wallace said the way Phelps “called me and his voice and his character at that moment, I didn’t know what to expect.” But Wallace said Phelps came to talk to him “face-to-face and he told me what had happened, and tears were in his eyes, flowing from him from the moment he stepped inside my motorhome.”

There is a federal investigation underway, and Wallace said, “I can now say I’ve talked to the FBI. I never thought that would happen.” Wallace acknowledged he never thought he would become an “activist” but he “felt something in my heart that I needed to step up and be a leader.” Wallace said of those who believe the noose incident was staged, “It’s simple-minded people like that, the ones that are afraid of change, they use everything in their power to defend what they stand up for instead of trying to listen and understand what’s going on” (“The View,” 6/23).

Wallace also is set to appear tonight on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" at 11:00pm ET (THE DAILY).
