Big Ten Still Six Weeks Away From Making Calls On Return

Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren said that the conference is at least six weeks away from making key determinations, and the conference today "extended the hold on all organized team activities, setting June 1 as the new date to re-evaluate." Warren: “We will take the next six weeks to gather the information to make an informed and intelligent decision.” Warren said that he will "lean on the Big Ten’s Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases," which was formed last month (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/4).

Meanwhile, the Big Ten announced today that it has "undertaken a league-wide initiative to promote mental health among its student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators." The league in December made public the formation of a Big Ten Mental Health and Wellness Cabinet, a board of 31 representatives from the school's 14 member institutions and affiliate members. As one of the cabinet's first strategies, the league has "purchased the use of the Calm app for its 9,600 student-athletes, as well as its athletic department personnel" (ESPN.com, 5/4).

NFL Officially Cancels International Games For This Season

By Ben Fischer

The NFL has canceled its five planned international games this year in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the league said today. The league had planned to again play four games in London and one in Mexico City as part of its efforts to find new fans and revenue abroad. Instead, the four teams that had been identified as the home teams for those games -- the Cardinals, Jaguars, Dolphins and Falcons -- will play their games at their home stadiums. A statement said the NFL stadia will allow for “consistent protocols focused on the well-being of players, personnel and fans.”

“After considerable analysis, we believe the decision to play all our games domestically this season is the right one for our players, our clubs, and all our fans in the U.S., Mexico and U.K.,” said NFL Exec VP and Chief Strategy & Growth Officer Chris Halpin. “We greatly appreciate the support of our governmental and stadium partners in Mexico and the United Kingdom, who all agree with this decision, and we look forward to returning for games in both countries in the 2021 season."

NHL Starts Process Of Whittling Down Possible "Bubble" Cities

NHL teams had until last Friday to submit bids to the league to be "one of the four cities chosen as a centralized bubble site for season resumption," and between 11-14 teams "submitted bids." That list is "expected to be whittled down a bit this week," though it is doubtful the league gets "right to the final four this early in the process." It is "not a guarantee the league and NHLPA go the four-site route for the season resumption format" (THEATHLETIC.com, 5/4).

Survey Shows Fans Want Sports Back Even If They Cannot Attend

A majority of sports fans surveyed by ESPN said that they are "in favor of watching televised sports without fans rather than waiting for sports to resume only when fans can be in attendance." The ESPN Coronavirus Lockdown Fan Study surveyed 1,004 sports fans aged 18 or older, and 65% were "in favor of sports returning even if fans can't be in the stands." That approval number "grew to 76% when participants were asked if they support the return of sports without fans in the stands if players were kept in hotels and their contact with others was closely monitored." Whenever sports do return, 88% of study participants who consider themselves avid sports fans said that they "plan to watch as much sports as they can" (ESPN.com, 5/4).

Legendary Dolphins, Colts Coach Don Shula Dies At 90

Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, died this morning at the age of 90. The Pro Football HOFer spent 33 years on the sidelines -- 26 with the Dolphins and seven with the Colts, winning Super Bowl VII and VIII. He also coached the only undefeated team in the Super Bowl era, the ’72 Dolphins. Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross in a statement said, “His contributions to his sport, to the Miami Dolphins franchise, and to the South Florida community will have a lasting impact” (THE DAILY).

Shula “put Miami on the national sports map,” and he “grew to be one of the most revered figures in NFL and Miami history” (MIAMI HERALD, 5/4). Shula could stand “alongside Henry Flagler for the sculpting of a Mount Rushmore for Florida” (PALM BEACH POST, 5/4). A recent generation “may be more familiar with Shula as a name on a popular chain of steakhouses than for the details of his career in football” (South Florida SUN SENTINEL, 5/4).
