Jimmie Johnson To Retire From NASCAR After '20 Season

NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson today revealed that he "will retire from full-time competition after next season." Johnson in a social media video indicated that "next season will be his final attempt to win a record eighth Cup title." He has scheduled a news conference tomorrow at Hendrick Motorsports HQ to "discuss his decision." Johnson had "two years remaining on his contract" when primary sponsor Ally "signed on before this season to replace Lowe's." Ally last month announced a three-year extension with the No. 48, but Johnson's future was "not tied to the renewal" through '23 (AP, 11/20).

Johnson repeatedly has said that he "plans to continue to race." He has "expressed an interest in road racing and competing in an IndyCar race on a road course" (NBCSPORTS.com, 11/20).
