Bears Head To Suburbs For 100th Season Celebration

The Bears are holding a 100th season celebration this weekend at Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill., after they "haven't had a fan convention" since '07. Estimated crowds will be 8,000-10,000 per day. The team is calling it the "largest gathering of Bears ever." The Bears said that the entire '19 team and coaching staff are "scheduled to attend," along with HOFers and alumni, totaling more than 200. Bears Senior VP/Marketing & Communications Scott Hagel addressed the choice of venue, saying that proximity to O'Hare Int'l Airport was "one of the primary considerations" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 6/7).

USC, United Announce Naming Rights For Coliseum Field

USC and United Airlines announced an agreement Friday that names the field at the school's football stadium, "United Airlines Field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum." The deal "will go into effect in August." Under the terms of a previous agreement announced in '18, United would pay USC $69M over 16 years to "have the Coliseum named United Airlines Memorial Coliseum." But that deal "came under scrutiny this spring." USC and United did "not disclose revised financial terms of the agreement but announced this deal will be for 10 years instead of 16" (LATIMES.com, 6/7).

Ice Cube Talks Big3 Business Model, Lakers On "The Boardroom"

Kevin Durant's Thirty Five Ventures on Friday dropped its latest episode of "The Boardroom," featuring a discussion with Ice Cube on the Big3, its relationship with the NBA and even the current state of the Lakers. Ice Cube said the league's 3-on-3 model is "sustainable," noting it is not yet profitable, but "close." Ice Cube: "We think we can be profitable this year." He also noted the Big3 approached the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver upon its launch in '17 about partnering up. "They (the NBA) were like, 'Well, if we do that we gotta run it,' and we were like 'no, thank you.' It's up to us to grow to a level where they say, we want to work with this."

The Big3 in April signed a deal with cbdMD, and Ice Cube said, "We owe it to athletes to make sure that they feel good when they come in and perform for us. ... If athletes use it, they love it, they feel like they need it, who are we to say you can't feel better, but you can take this opioid?" A noted Lakers fan, he also addressed the turmoil surrounding the team: "I was surprised (Magic Johnson) even took the job. I always thought he was cover, in a way, for Rob (Pelinka). I thought Magic was qualified and Rob wasn't" ("The Boardroom," YouTube.com, 6/7).

Meanwhile, the Big3 announced a partnership with 90 Plus Group, which will help bring the league to China beginning this fall (THE DAILY).

Kurt Busch In Talks To Renew With Chip Ganassi Racing

NASCAR driver Kurt Busch has entered renewal talks with Chip Ganassi Racing, his attorney confirmed to THE DAILY, potentially staving off Busch’s retirement and giving the team another year with Monster Energy backing. Busch switched from Stewart-Haas Racing to CGR’s No. 1 Chevy this year in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, with Monster also making the switch with about $5M worth of funding. While the initial deal only covered the '19 season, sources say that Busch has been buoyed by a strong start to the season on the track and has decided to enter talks about a return in '20.

Sources say talks between CGR and Monster have been delayed somewhat because Monster is still immersed in talks with NASCAR about whether to continue as an official partner of the sanctioning body next year. However, Monster is likely to continue supporting Busch, a longtime ambassador for the brand, should he reach an agreement to extend with CGR.

North Carolina by Thursday afternoon was sold out of all-session passes for its series hosting Auburn (UNC).
