Preakness takes another hit as Country House drops out....NFL concussion fund pays out $485M thus far, but concerns remain....Univision Deportes rebranding as TUDN this summer

Preakness Takes Another Blow With Derby Winner Skipping Race

Kentucky Derby winner Country House "will not run in the May 18 Preakness Stakes because of a developing illness," making him the first Derby victor to skip the Preakness since Grindstone in '96. The disqualified Maximum Security also will skip the Maryland race, leaving the event "without an obvious lead story line." This marks a "blow to a field that will be dominated by horses that did not run in the Derby" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 5/7).

As of today, the prospective Preakness field "stood at 10, with just three horses from the Derby" (DRF.com, 5/7). This will be the "first time since 1951 that the Top 3 finishers" in the Derby "will not run" in the Preakness (TWITTER.com, 5/7).

NFL Concussion Fund Pays Out $485M; More Doctors Sought

The claims administrator for the NFL concussion fund said that it has paid out $485M since its start in '17. However, some retired players' lawyers at a court hearing today in Philadelphia said that there "aren't enough doctors in the approved network to diagnose dementia cases." The lawyers "oppose a rule to require players to be evaluated by doctors within 150 miles of home." The fund is expected to pay out more than $1B over 65 years (AP, 5/7).

Univision Deportes Will Rebrand As TUDN This Summer

By Ian Thomas

Univision Deportes will be rebranded as TUDN, its parent company Univision Communications announced at a pre-upfront press event today. The rebrand, which effectively translates to “your sports network” in English and is pronounced TU-DE-ENE, will take place this summer in both Mexico and the U.S. The net later this year will launch a new streaming service called TUDNxtra, providing subscribers to participating pay-TV packages in the U.S. with live access to all of the soccer matches TUDN holds the rights to. This includes Liga MX and UEFA's Champions and Europa leagues. It will also add a whiparound show on the service for its UEFA matchday coverage.

Univision Communications said that one major pay-TV provider has already signed on to carry TUDNxtra, with more agreements expected. The service will launch ahead of the '19-20 UEFA Champions League season in September. Also, Univision has signed an extension of its U.S. media-rights deal with the Mexican National Team through '22.

OU President Looks To Expand Alcohol Sales At Sporting Events

Univ. of Oklahoma President James Gallogly "will propose to sell alcoholic beverages at OU sporting events, including Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium," to the Board of Regents during a Friday meeting. This is the "first step of a year-long process to have alcohol sold at home football games." The school in a "pilot program" sold beer at home basketball games during the '18-19 season and at last month's spring football game (OUDAILY.com, 5/7).

Oklahoma State and Tulsa in recent years "added alcohol sales during home football games," Tulsa starting in '16 and OSU in '18 (TULSAWORLD.com, 5/7).

Sources: Seattle NHL Franchise In No Rush To Hire GM

The Oilers today formally introduced Ken Holland as their new GM, eliminating him as a possible hire for the Seattle NHL expansion team's GM role. Sources said that the Seattle franchise is in "no rush to make this hire." There "isn’t an urgency to get a GM in place" before this year's Draft, "one in which Seattle has no picks." The organization "could wait all next season and still have plenty of time to put a staff in place" for its inaugural '21-22 season (THEATHLETIC.com, 5/7).
