NHL's Bill Daly Says League Supports Idea Of Women's Pro Hockey

By Ian Thomas

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the league “supports the objective -- of both the NWHL and the elite women’s players -- of allowing for the opportunity of women hockey players to play the sport at the professional level” following more than 250 professional women’s hockey players earlier today stating that they would collectively not play in any league in North America until a sustainable pro league was created. However, Daly noted the NHL was not involved in that development and would “need some time to better understand what the full picture and implications look like.”

The NWHL in a separate statement said that the league is still planning on starting its ’19-20 season in October, which would be its fifth. The league said it would be offering players increased salaries, as well as a 50-50 revenue split from league-level sponsorships and media rights deals. The statement said that following the CWHL ceasing operations, the league “embraced the opportunity to build the one league for North America.” It added that the NWHL had “raised significant investments and met with top brands (who) want to support one thriving league.”

The MLS team and the Riverfront Alliance of Delaware County sent out an RFP to consultants "asking them to prepare a master plan for more than 100 acres" around the stadium. The vision is to "create a sports and entertainment complex around the soccer stadium that include a multi-sports facility with indoor and outdoor fields" and even a possible esports venue. About half of the 100 acres to be developed "are owned" by Keystone Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the Union (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/2).

The game is not being played at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum because the A's "are using" the venue that week (TWITTER.com, 5/2).
