NFL Swapping '21, '22 Super Bowl Broadcasts Between CBS, NBC

By John Ourand

The NFL decided to swap Super Bowl networks in two years, giving CBS the '21 game and NBC the game in '22. Both NBC and CBS pushed for the change, since the '22 Super Bowl competes directly with the '22 Beijing Games. This is believed to be the first time that the Olympics will have been preempted off broadcast TV since NBC first started producing them in '88. The Beijing Games start Feb. 4, 2022; the Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 6 -- the opening Sunday night of the Olympics. The N.Y. Post first reported the story earlier this afternoon.

By taking the '21 Super Bowl, CBS can sell its own Super Bowl without competition from the Olympics. By taking the '22 game, NBC can package both big events together.

The Rockets and GM Daryl Morey have agreed on a five-year contract extension, after talks began during the team's "rocky start of the season." Fertitta added, "This makes Daryl one of the highest paid general managers in the league." Morey said that he "would like to complete his career in Houston" (HOUSTONCHRONICLE.com, 3/13).

S.C. Pols Bullish On Panthers HQ After Meeting With Tepper

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and other top state politicians met with NFL Panthers Owner David Tepper today at the state's Governor's Mansion, with McMaster indicating that Tepper was "very interested in what South Carolina had to offer." Several S.C. lawmakers "spoke as if the proposal to move" the team's practice facility and HQ "was a done deal." But Tepper "was not at the news conference" after the meeting, and the team "didn't have any immediate comment on its plans." Also, it "wasn't clear whether Charlotte or North Carolina might make an offer to keep the facility" (AP, 3/13).

Alouettes, CFL Stay Mum On Reports Of Impending Sale

The CFL Montreal Alouettes today offered "no comment" regarding reports the franchise is "close to being sold." This comes after reports that the team, owned by Robert Wetenhall for more than 20 years, is "on the verge of being sold." TSN Radio's Tony Marinaro tweeted that former Alouettes player Eric Lapointe was "heading up a local group that was looking into purchasing" the team. CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie "would neither confirm nor deny reports of the Alouettes sale, saying only the league remains committed to helping the franchise return to its former greatness" (CP, 3/13).
