S.F. Mayor Says Raiders Should Play In Oakland Next Season

S.F. Mayor London Breed made it clear today she was not a fan of the Raiders playing at Oracle Park in ‘19, saying the team “should play in Oakland.” She said there are a “number of challenges” to address in S.F., including the Warriors’ move next fall to Chase Center. Breed said, “We have a number of things for years that we’ve been working to prepare for. We don’t need another layer to add to what we already have in terms of an area that’s really congested, filled with construction and will host a number of concerts and games for both basketball and baseball over the coming months.” Breed noted she has conveyed her position to the Giants (KTVU-Fox, 2/5).

Crowds Of 1.5 Million Descend On Boston For Pats' Parade

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh announced that the Patriots' Super Bowl victory parade drew 1.5 million people to Boston on Tuesday, "the largest parade crowd in recent memory" (TWITTER.com, 2/5). Players and their families rode duck boats and "waved to revelers." The boats began rolling from Hynes Convention Center around 11:18am ET and "came to a stop roughly 90 minutes later at City Hall Plaza." Players "tossed footballs" to fans and "signed autographs when they disembarked from the vessels." Patriots President Jonathan Kraft was "among the many team representatives who held the Vince Lombardi Trophy aloft." Team Owner Robert Kraft "wore a massive diamond necklace that said 'Championships,'" a gift from rapper Meek Mill (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 2/5).

Acura Signs On As Grand Prix Of Long Beach Title Sponsor

By Adam Stern
acura

Acura this afternoon will formally announce it has acquired the title sponsorship of the Grand Prix of Long Beach, replacing a longtime deal with Toyota that ended last year. Terms of the Acura deal are not being disclosed, but sources said it is in the low seven figures annually and is for multiple years. Acura confirmed it will represent its single largest marketing expenditure in motorsports. The Grand Prix on April 12-14 includes an NTT IndyCar Series race, IMSA race, other lower-level races and an automotive expo.

Acura VP & GM Jon Ikeda said that Honda's luxury brand bought the entitlement because it has been pushing into racing both with its car designs and a new IMSA program in recent years, “and this seemed like the next logical step for us.” Moreover, Honda and Acura are based in nearby Torrance, Calif., and Acura has 20 dealerships in Southern California. Ikeda said that Honda decided to have its luxury brand take the title partnership because Honda already has a strong brand association with the event thanks to its IndyCar teams winning many races there. Honda will get some activation space alongside Acura at the expo.

Bears Get Rid Of Sideline Perk Following Fan's Lawsuit

The Bears "have axed a perk" for season-ticket holders in the fallout from a legal challenge. The Pregame On-Field-Warm-Up Experience allowed season-seat holders who "had enough points to stand on the sidelines, watching the team get ready for a home game at Soldier Field." Last year, Bears season-ticket holder and Packers fan Russell Beckman sued the team, alleging that Bears officials in '16 "refused him access to the sidelines" before a Packers-Bears game "if he wore the Packers green and yellow gear" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 2/5).

Could NBC Logo On Golf Bag Affect Coverage Of McIlroy?

One element of Rory McIlroy's new GolfPass digital venture is that NBC Sports' logo will appear on his golf bag, and he said he does not think he will get "any different treatment" from other networks covering golf because of it. NBC Sports President of Golf Mike McCarley said it "came across our mind absolutely" that McIlroy might receive different treatment from other nets. McCarley: "But he volunteered it. We're looking to build this business together and he starts to believe in this and says, 'Hey, look, I've got an open spot on my bag and I believe in this and I want to put the logo on the bag." McIlroy said he is a "business partner" with NBC, and if he plays "good golf, that takes care of itself" ("Squawk Box," CNBC, 2/5).

Local Challenge To Suns' Arena Renovation Deal Fizzles

By Mike Sunnucks

A ballot measure effort challenging Phoenix’ $230M arena renovation deal with the Suns has been nixed. A group called Common Sense Phoenix had been collecting voter petition signatures to challenge the Phoenix City Council’s approved plans to modernize Talking Stick Resort Arena. However, the cost of collecting signatures and a promised court fight with the city and Suns over whether the deal is referable to voters led organizers to end their effort. The move clears the way for the arena renovations to get rolling. Most of the upgrades will start next year.

Mountain West TV Slotting Could Hurt SDSU-UNM Attendance

Univ. of New Mexico men's basketball hosts San Diego State tonight at 9:00pm MT at Dreamstyle Arena -- better known as The Pit -- where a "downward trend in attendance" will be evident. Tonight's game "won't be a sellout" at the roughly 15,000-seat venue. This comes amid "growing frustration" from Mountain West ADs and coaches due to "self-inflicted damage they feel is being done" by the league’s TV contract. CBS Sports Network and ESPN can "choose random MWC games to play in the 9 p.m. time slot without any financial compensation for the home team." UNM AD Eddie Nunez: "I have voiced my concerns to the conference" (ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL, 2/5).
