CFP Selection Committee Adds Three New Members

Arkansas State AD Terry Mohajir, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno and former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum "will join the 13-member" CFP selection committee this spring. Each will "serve a three-year term and will replace outgoing committee members Jeff Bower, Herb Deromedi and Bobby Johnson, whose terms expire in February." Oregon AD Rob Mullens will "remain the committee's chair for a second season." Mohajir becomes the "first Group of 5 athletic director to join the committee" (ESPN.com, 1/16).

Brennaman Retiring From Reds Radio Booth At Season's End

Reds radio play-by-play broadcaster Marty Brennaman today announced that '19 "would be his final season" in the booth after having been the team's "lead broadcaster" since '74. Brennaman received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball HOF in '00, and he was inducted in the National Sportscasters & Sportswriters HOF in '05 (CINCINNATI.com, 1/16). The '19 season will be Brennaman's 55th as a broadcaster and his 46th in Cincinnati (Reds).

Mark Tatum: NBA Taking Steps To Shore Up Gambling Policies

NBA Deputy Commissioner & COO Mark Tatum said that the league is "preparing to double down on policing its players, teams and staff amid the expansion of legalized sports gambling." Tatum revealed that "moves have been made to get up to speed on the opportunities and threats surrounding the issue" since May's landmark Supreme Court ruling. That will mean "extra resources to prevent the kind of in-house infractions that have plagued a number of sports." Tatum: "A lot of it has to do with education with respect to our players, with respect to our teams" (ESPN.com, 1/16).

Nike, Celtics' Jayson Tatum Showcasing New High-Tech Shoes

Celtics F Jayson Tatum for tonight's home game against the Raptors will become the "first NBA player to play a game in the new HyperAdapt BB, Nike's first auto-lacing performance basketball sneaker." The shoe "replaces traditional laces with an intricate series of cables, controlled by slide-touch bars on a syncing phone app or two toggle buttons on the side of the shoe." The idea is to provide an "exact, on-demand fit every time." The settings can be stored, "returning to the same locked-in preference in an instant." The shoe will launch at retail next month around the NBA All-Star Game (ESPN.com, 1/16).

Golf Magazine Debuts New Look Ahead Of 60th Anniversary

Golf magazine today unveiled a redesign of its monthly print publication as it approaches its 60th anniversary later this year. The new magazine premiered with the publication’s February issue, which hit newsstands yesterday. The new dimensions make the magazine more than 16% larger than the former version, with the magazine also featuring 21% more pages of content compared to last year. Ahead of the anniversary, Golf hired a number of new editorial voices, including Will Leitch and Paige Spiranac. Golf magazine and Golf.com CEO Jason Adel said under new ownership from Howard Milstein, the brand has been able to take "calculated risks and make strategic investments that will pay off in a big way." He added this is "only the beginning," referencing a Golf.com redesign scheduled for February.

Orioles Nix Spring Training Game In Annapolis

The Orioles "will not be playing an exhibition game in Annapolis this spring" and are instead "eyeing a game against an MLB team at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium" in March '20. Also, the Army-Navy baseball game will not be played at Camden Yards in '19 "due to scheduling conflicts." The Orioles "still plan to host a 'Celebrate Navy Day' at Camden Yards late" in the '19 season, and they will still visit the academy in March. The Orioles last February announced a partnership with Navy, which also included a "spring training visit from the Navy baseball team at their Sarasota complex," the latter of which is now "very unlikely" (TWITTER.com, 1/16).
