USA Cycling CEO Stepping Down After Three Years At The Helm

USA Cycling CEO Derek Bouchard-Hall will step down Dec. 31 after three years leading the NGB. He will be taking over as CEO at an as-yet-unknown Europe-based USA Cycling sponsor. “We’re happy for Derek,” said USAC BOD Chair Bob Stapleton. “This is the consequence of hiring good people. You want to hire people other people want to hire. We’re going to miss him here.” Bouchard-Hall joined in '15 and earned praise for confronting the sports’ rampant doping problems, and then oversaw a near total turnover in the NGB’s senior exec staff.

USA Cycling won five medals at the '16 Rio Games, marking the biggest haul of any single sport outside of gymnastics, swimming and track & field. “We’re fundamentally in a good place,” Stapleton said. “And we’re financially sound, so there’s a lot here for a new CEO to work with.” Bouchard-Hall: “My professional career has focused on improving organizations and setting them on a new path. I am confident that I have done that at USA Cycling.” Stapleton will serve as interim CEO, but he hopes the search to replace Bouchard-Hall will be in advanced stages by Dec. 31. The high-performance sports side of the organization is stable ahead of the '20 Tokyo Games, he said, so there is no need to rush a search.
