World Surf League To Adopt Gender Equality In Cash Prizes

The World Surf League will institute full gender equality in cash prizes in '19, bringing women’s purses up to the same level as the men at all of its owned competitions for the first time. The change affects the top-level Championship Tour, Longboard Tour, Junior World Championships and Big Wave Tour starting Oct. 1. The changes will take longer for some Qualifying Series events that are sanctioned by the WSL but owned by independent operators. WSL CEO Sophie Goldschmidt said that tour leadership had been considering the step for a few months: "We felt it was the right time to do this." The league today also is unveiling its '19 schedule.
