Welcome To Miami: Jeter, Sherman Introduced As Marlins Owners

Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman held their first press conference as Marlins owners this morning at Marlins Park, and they "did not confirm the anticipated payroll slashing but implied payroll reduction was likely." Sherman: "We are going to try to operate the team financially responsibly and successfully on the field.” Meanwhile, Jeter said that he will be "very hands on" in his role as CEO. He said, "I don’t think people would respect me if I wasn’t here.” Sherman "spoke of '10, 12, 14' investors" within their ownership group. But he said the exact number “is not totally relevant” (MIAMIHERALD.com, 10/3).

Strong Demand For AL Wild Card Game On Secondary Ticket Market

The MLB Postseason begins tonight with the Twins-Yankees AL Wild Card game in N.Y. With an average resale price of $190, demand for the game at Yankee Stadium is the third-highest for a WC game that SeatGeek has seen since the aggregator started tracking the secondary market in '10, behind only Giants-Mets last year ($252) and Cubs-Pirates in '15 ($216). However, prices for the game have dropped 15% over the past two days (Preston Bounds, Assistant Editor).

Meanwhile, brands spent $558M to advertise during the '16 MLB Postseason, according to data provided to THE DAILY by Kantar Media, a 41% increase over '15 and a 47% increase over '14 (David Broughton, Research Director).

A new FS1 ad campaign in N.Y. is "asking riders to 'pick a side' on the Times Square to Grand Central shuttle: Are the Knicks hopeful or hopeless?" Half of the subway train "has a negative ad on the outside, referring to the franchise as 'hopeless' alongside photos of Joakim Noah and Tim Hardaway Jr." The other side of the car "featured 'hopeful' along with a picture of star Kristaps Porzingis" (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 10/3).

NFL Ticket Sales Solid Through Week 4 Despite Trump Criticism

By Daniel Kaplan

The NFL said ticket sales through the first quarter of the season were solid, comparable to the last two years at the same point. This comes after President Trump called for a boycott of the NFL if players continued to kneel for the national anthem as some fans drew media attention for burning merchandise and season tickets. NFL Exec VP/Communications Joe Lockhart noted stadium capacity remains over 90%, just like last year. “Ticket sales are about even with last year and the year before,” he said. Lockhart noted “MNF” TV ratings were up, while other ratings also were strong.
