USOC, LA 2024 Want Concerns Addressed Before Accepting '28 Games

The USOC and LA 2024 are building a list of concerns that would have to be addressed if the IOC offers L.A. the '28 Games instead of the '24 Games later this summer, USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said. The IOC meets July 11 in Switzerland, where it is expected to approve a plan to award the '24 and '28 Games simultaneously. At that point, L.A., rival Paris and the IOC would begin to work toward a deal.

“We’re trying to begin to make sure that we have all the questions in place that would need to be answered,” Blackmun said. “But at this point we’re focused on 2024 just like LA 2024 is, and it’s really going to be up to the IOC to make its decision in July, and then we’ll hopefully take our list of questions, if that’s the course we’re taking, and make sure we get them answered before we make any decisions.”

Blackmun would not say what specific challenges have been identified, or what specifically the American bid would ask of the IOC in exchange for agreeing to a delayed Games. However, he acknowledged the USOC is still “firmly committed to bringing the Games back to the United States."
