Miami-Dade Commission Approves Deal For Sun Life Stadium Upgrades

The Miami-Dade County Commission today approved a deal that "paves the way for major renovations of Sun Life Stadium," which include a canopy over the seats. The body by a vote of 7-4 "gave support to a plan for the county to pay incentives" to the Dolphins for hosting major events. In return, Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross will proceed with $350M in upgrades. The team will continue to pay property taxes on the venue. Ross "will largely fund the renovation but may seek a state subsidy recently approved for stadium construction to help with the cost" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 6/17).

Breeders' Cup Soon To Announce Sites For Next Three Years

The Breeders' Cup this month is expected to announce the next three sites for the competition after this year's running at Santa Anita Park. Sources said that next year "would be at Keeneland, followed by a return to Santa Anita" in '16 and then Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in '17. It would be the first time the event would be held at Keeneland or Del Mar. The schedule also would "ensure the longest absence of the Breeders' Cup at Churchill – at least seven years – despite the fact that the track has recorded the event's largest crowds and biggest betting totals" (COURIER-JOURNAL.com, 6/17).

Dave Joyner Expected To "Quietly" Resign As Penn State AD

Dave Joyner's tenure as Penn State AD is "about to quietly conclude," as it has been "decided that Joyner will not stay on and his departure will soon be announced, possibly by the end of this week." Joyner "will be remembered as the man who ran the ship, for better or worse, through its most turbulent waters" – in the two-and-a-half years following the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Sources indicated that PSU President Eric Barron "has not decided on a successor" (PENNLIVE.com, 6/17).

Meanwhile, Penn State's LED Nittany Lion logos "newly installed on the videoboards" at Beaver Stadium will be lit for the first time tonight. The logos each measure 35 by 25 feet (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/17).

Online Vote Selects "Drive" As Name Of NBA D-League Franchise

The NBA D-League franchise in Grand Rapids, Mich., today announced that "Drive" was selected as the team nickname "in an online vote of close to 5,100." Team President Steve Jbara said that Drive received 78% of the vote, and "finishing second through fourth in online voting from May 1-10 were Chairmen, Blue Racers and Horse Power." The logo was "designed by creative team" with the Pistons, which is the D-League team's direct affiliate (MLIVE.com, 6/17).

Another Look At "June 17, 1994," On Anniversary Of OJ Bronco Chase

Today marks the 20th anniversary of OJ Simpson's white Bronco chase, which served as the subject matter for an ESPN "30 for 30" film, "June 17, 1994." ESPN Films Exec Producer Connor Schell said director Brett Morgen is "a master of how he uses archives and it was such an innovative way to tell a story that everyone is familiar with in a different way." The "premise of that film is that everything in the sports world was happening that same day – the NBA Finals between the Knicks and the Rockets, the victory parade for the New York Rangers, Arnold Palmer's final U.S. Open, and the World Cup opening in Chicago – so it is a great collision and juxtaposition of news events."

Schell said Morgen's "approach was to take you back to that day because everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing, and he told it in such a way using only archival footage that was completely immersive, so you were able to appreciate what was happening through the personal experience" (HOLLYWOODREPORTER.com, 6/17).
