Dan Marino To Withdraw From Concussion Suit Against NFL

Pro Football HOFer Dan Marino "intends to withdraw from a lawsuit against the NFL for concussions" that was filed in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia. The move comes less than a day after reports had Marino joining 14 other former players "to sue the league." A source said, "It was never Marino's intention to initiate litigation in this case, but to ensure that in the event he had adverse health consequences down the road, he would be covered with health benefits." Marino and his attorneys reportedly are "attempting to discover how Marino's name was joined to the lawsuit" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 6/3).

ESPN's Ed Werder ‏wrote on his Twitter feed, "People close to Dan Marino were concerned his conversations with CEO Tom Garfinkel about a position with Dolphins jeopardized by NFL lawsuit." The N.Y. Post's Bart Hubbuch: "Sounds like Dan Marino might have gotten an 'If you want to work in this league again ...' phone call yesterday." ESPN's Jim Trotter: "I've heard of accidentally doing a lot of things, but never accidentally filing a lawsuit. #liveandlearn"

Gary Bettman Discusses State Of NHL Ahead Of Stanley Cup Final

With the Kings-Rangers Stanley Cup Final set to begin tomorrow, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman appeared live via satellite on CNBC this morning and discussed the state of the league. Bettman: "We're in a very good place. We've spent a fair amount of time trying to build the right foundation for our game, making sure that the game on the ice is healthy, entertaining, exciting and competitive and at the same time building our businesses around the game, particularly as it relates to our business media partners such as NBC in the United States and using all the digital platforms."

When asked if Steve Ballmer acquiring the Clippers for $2B is good for NHL owners, Bettman said, "I think you have a unique circumstance with the Clippers, both as it relates to the unfortunate way this developed, the market itself and the uniqueness of the person who's buying. If the Clippers are worth $2 billion, we have franchises that are worth multiples of that" ("Squawk on the Street," CNBC, 6/3).

Smart USA Agrees To Sponsor AVP, Entitling Two Tournaments

Car manufacturer smart USA today announced a deal to sponsor the AVP as the official automotive partner of all seven AVP tournaments this season. The agreement also includes title sponsorship of two events in Southern California: the Aug. 14-17 smart AVP Manhattan Beach Open and the Sept. 18-21 smart AVP Championships at Huntington Beach. smart USA will have one-year options to extend for the '15 and '16 seasons (AVP).

CFLPA Releases Terms Of Latest CBA Offer Rejected By League

The CFLPA today released terms of its revised CBA proposal, "a day after it was rejected by the league." The offer tabled "called for a shorter term and included concessions on the salary cap and the amount of revenue that would trigger the re-negotiation." It covered "four years instead of five" and called for a C$5.2M cap this season, down from C$5.8M. The CFL "had given players until Monday to accept their latest proposal to be eligible for their ratification bonuses." The league today extended the deadline to Friday while calling the CFLPA’s offer "unrealistic" (CP, 6/3).

Nesquik Announces Partnership With Youth Soccer Organizations

Nestle's Nesquik brand today announced a partnership with youth sports organizations US Youth Soccer and AYSO Soccer to support education and awareness of healthy recovery and refueling options. As part of the deal, Nesquik will have a digital presence on the websites of both organizations, including instructional videos from ESPN soccer analyst Alexi Lalas and NWSL Seattle Reign F Sydney Leroux. The brand also will be involved in youth soccer tournaments this year (Nestle).

The state of New Jersey today submitted a filing to the U.S. Supreme Court saying that the "federal law restricting sports betting to only four states needs to be reviewed immediately," arguing that the ban "impermissibly restricts states' rights" (AP, 6/3).
 
Dunkin' Donuts today announced the launch of its Ultimate Liverpool FC Fan Experience Sweepstakes in partnership with the EPL club. The grand prize is a fan experience during Liverpool's upcoming summer U.S. tour. Fans can enter via Dunkin' Donuts' Facebook page (Dunkin' Donuts).
