Some Players May Not Benefit From NFL Concussion Settlement

New details from the NFL's proposed $765M concussion settlement reveal that the "first players diagnosed with football-related brain damage would be shut out of the deal." With the number of confirmed brain damage cases growing, some players and lawyers "fear there isn't enough money to cover all eligible players." The settlement "disqualifies most players who died" before '06. Data from the NFLPA and Boston Univ. shows there are "already more than 300 cases of former players who would qualify in the highest compensation categories" (ESPN.com, 9/20).

Sources: Capitals To Announce Outdoor NHL Game Coming To DC

DC-based WJFK-FM's Sky Kerstein on his Twitter feed cited sources as saying that the Capitals on Saturday will announce that DC is "getting an outdoor hockey game" in the '14-15 season. Kerstein later wrote, "I'm hearing probably Winter Classic" (TWITTER.com, 9/19). There are "no specifics on whether the game would be the Winter Classic or, potentially, part of some sort of continuation" of the NHL Stadium Series. Nationals Park is the "one logical spot" for the game (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 9/19).

More Than 55,000 Tickets Sold For West Virginia-Maryland In Baltimore

Maryland on Saturday will play a football game at M&T Bank Stadium for the first time since '10, and while the game against West Virginia "might not sell out" at the 71,000-seat venue, 55,000 tickets had been sold as of Thursday morning. Maryland Deputy AD Nathan Pine said that a "surge in ticket sales this week" has pushed sales from 46,000 last week to the current number, and he believes that "most of those who have purchased tickets in the past few days ... are Maryland fans" (Baltimore SUN, 9/20). UM will receive $3.5M from the stadium for playing the game there (Mult.).

Maryland on Saturday will be wearing the latest iteration of Under Armour's "Maryland Pride" uniforms.

Some EPL Clubs Will Not Take Part In Rainbow Laces Campaign

Some EPL clubs, including Manchester United, Tottenham and Norwich have "refused to back the rainbow laces campaign designed to highlight support for a campaign addressing homophobia." The clubs are "unhappy with what they perceive to be a lack of consultation by the betting company Paddy Power and gay rights charity Stonewall around the initiative." Other clubs, such as Everton, "will support the campaign, with their players wearing the laces" Saturday against West Ham (GUARDIAN, 9/20). The campaign also has been criticized by a gay rights group.

Showtime's New Documentary Shows Both Sides Of Lawrence Taylor

Showtime on Friday will debut "LT: The Life & Times," a biographical documentary about Pro Football HOFer Lawrence Taylor, at 8:00pm ET. Interview subjects include an "A-list group" of Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick and Oliver Stone. But NEWSDAY's Neil Best writes the "stars are LT's close friend Dino Kyriacou, and especially his ex-wife, Linda Garrett, and grown children, who chronicle the ups and downs of life with Taylor in starkly honest terms" (NEWSDAY, 9/20).

The ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER's Michael Lev writes the documentary "paints a warts-and-all picture" of Taylor, and it is "overflowing with fascinating material." USATODAY.com's Chris Strauss writes, "Throughout the entire film, Taylor is refreshingly authentic and open." The N.Y. DAILY NEWS' Nathaniel Vinton: "No closet door seems to go unopened in the film."
