West Virginia Signs 12-Year Multimedia Rights Deal With IMG College

By Michael Smith

West Virginia’s long and winding road to a multimedia rights agreement came to a conclusion today when it signed a 12-year deal worth more than $80M with IMG College. The two sides originally came to terms in January, but in February the process was halted because of complaints about the bidding. Once that was resolved, IMG and WVU went back to the table and finalized a 12-year deal that kicks in immediately for the '13-14 season. The Mountaineers will have the opportunity to make more money from the deal through a revenue-share agreement if IMG hits certain sales thresholds.

IMG will sell WVU’s rights in sponsorship and advertising across TV, radio and digital platforms, as well as in-venue signage and promotions. IMG Audio will manage WVU’s radio network, while the firm will work with West Virginia Media Holdings to develop TV ad inventory on coaches shows and other programming. “WVU now has the opportunity to expand its revenue base by engaging new national sponsors, while building our athletic and university brand,” WVU AD Oliver Luck said. IMG’s WVU sales team will operate out of Morgantown, W.V.

The new end-facing displays will be about 300% larger than the old displays, while the center displays will provide an image that is more than 800% larger than the previous display (Pepsi Center).

Federal Judge Orders Goodell Deposed In Ticketholders Case

By Daniel Kaplan

A Dallas federal judge ordered NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to be deposed as part of the lawsuit against the league brought by disgruntled ticketholders from Super Bowl XLV. Judge Barbara Lynn did sharply limit the deposition questioning to only pertain to the issue of what Goodell knew about the seating fiasco that afflicted that event. The NFL was concerned the plaintiffs' lawyers would question Goodell about how much money he spent while in Dallas, and the type of accommodations he had.

The plaintiffs have tried for most of the year to get Goodell for a deposition, and had been originally turned down by the judge until her order yesterday. But the judge’s order could be somewhat bittersweet. It comes one day after Lynn denied class certification, meaning any case would have to go forward with just the named plaintiffs. Lack of class certification would make the case much less worthwhile for the plaintiff firms to proceed with, said John Goldman, a sports attorney with Herrick Feinstein.

Michael Avenatti, the lead counsel for the ticketholders, replied he “absolutely” plans to continue with the case. Lynn ruled Goodell’s deposition will occur no later than Aug. 5.

Katie Couric's Show Features Discussion Of ESPN's "Nine For IX"

Today's edition of "Katie" with host Katie Couric featured a discussion about ESPN's "Nine for IX" documentary series. The show featured appearances by Venus Williams, ESPN's Hannah Storm, ABC's Robin Roberts, former U.S. National soccer team players Julie Foudy and Michelle Akers and Whoopi Goldberg, who served as a producer on the project. Goldberg said of reuniting the '07 Rutgers women's basketball team – who were the target of derogatory comments from radio host Don Imus – for a short film on Rutgers coach Vivian Stringer, "The greatest thing for me was they said, 'That's not who we were. His description of us is not who we were and when we stood as a team and told the world that that was not us he was talking about and they got to look at us.' Everybody said, 'Hey Imus, what the hell is wrong with you?'"

Storm noted Basketball HOFer Sheryl Swoopes, also the focus of a film, was pregnant when the WNBA first began, creating a "big controversy." That was followed by the announcement she was gay, which was a "very landmark decision." Roberts: "She was not the most likeable figure at the time" ("Katie," 7/11).
