NFL Denies Big Lead Report That Bornstein Is Stepping Down

By John Ourand

The NFL is denying a report from The Big Lead's Jason McIntyre that said NFL Exec VP/Media Steve Bornstein is stepping down. An NFL spokesperson said, "I just spoke to (Bornstein). He said flatly, 'No truth to it.'" It has been widely speculated that the longtime exec would step down when his current contract expires in the middle of '14, especially considering that NFL Network is near full distribution levels and the league's media rights deals run until '22. As the NFL's top media exec, one of Bornstein's next big deals will be to sell rights to the league's out-of-market Sunday Ticket package.

Bucks Owner Herb Kohl Says Milwaukee Will Have New Arena

Bucks Owner Herb Kohl today said that he is "confident a new facility will be built to take the place of the BMO Harris Bradley Center." Kohl said, "We know we have to find a way to a new facility and we will. The question is when and how." Kohl repeatedly said that the new venue would be a "multiple-purpose entertainment center" (JSONLINE.com, 6/3). These are Kohl's "first remarks in more than a year on a possible new arena." He "declined to discuss any details of financing" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/3).

Staples Center Sets Sales Records For Its 18 Event Suites

Staples Center today announced that it has set a new sales record for its 18 event suites. Records for the arena's suite business include the highest Lakers regular-season revenue; the highest Clippers regular-season revenue by more than 40%; and the highest NHL Kings regular-season per-game average revenue by more than 54%. The venue's suites also set a revenue record for the '13 Grammy Awards. In addition, all 168 suites were sold out for regional NCAA men's basketball tournament games (AEG).

AVP Adds IMG-Operated Events in Manhattan Beach, Atlantic City

By Tripp Mickle, Staff Writer

The AVP has partnered with IMG to add two events to its calendar, one in Manhattan Beach, Calif., and one in Atlantic City. IMG has the license to produce the Manhattan Beach Open and the agency teamed up with the Atlantic City Alliance, a tourism and convention group, to bring an event to New Jersey. The agency will operate those two competitions. The Manhattan event will be Aug. 23-25 and the Atlantic City event will be Sept 6-8.

IMG ran the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, which ran in '11 and '12 while the AVP was in bankruptcy. The agency discontinued the Jose Cuervo Series this year after the brand ended its sponsorship. In addition to the Manhattan Beach and Atlantic City events, the tour will visit Salt Lake City; Cincinnati; St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Santa Barbara and Huntington Beach, Calif., between August and October. Wasserman Media Group is operating those five events and consulting the AVP on sponsorship sales and strategic consulting.

M&T Bank Stadium To Host Penn State-Maryland Game In '15

Maryland football will face Penn State at M&T Bank Stadium on Oct. 24, 2015, marking UM's "first game in Baltimore as a member of the Big Ten." The game replaces the Virginia Tech-Maryland matchup originally scheduled for '14. Ravens VP/Stadium Operations Roy Sommerhof said that "rather than reschedule a replacement game for Maryland" in '14, the NFL team "asked the university to bring a Big Ten opponent to Baltimore the following year." Sommerhof is "expecting a sell-out crowd" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/3).
