Dish Network Agrees To Carriage Deal With FS San Diego RSN

By John Ourand

Dish Network has agreed to carry FS San Diego on its America's Top 120 Plus and Latino Dos packages this April. The RSN, which launched last March, carries Padres, Clippers and Ducks games. Dish says the channel will launch April 1, in time for MLB Opening Day. The deal could put pressure on Time Warner Cable, which has never carried the RSN. AT&T, Cox and DirecTV all have signed carriage deals to carry FS San Diego.

Raiders Plan To Block Off Some Seats At O.co Coliseum

The Raiders are "going to block off the top of Mt. Davis" on the east side of O.co Coliseum (sections 335-355) as well as upper deck sections 300-303 on the south side and 331-334 on the north side. It is not known "how many total seats are in those sections," but with a "pre-adjusted capacity of 63,132, the Coliseum had the second-lowest in the NFL." The team this afternoon is scheduled to announce more specifics, including a "price reduction on some season tickets." One home game was blacked out in '12 (CSNBAYAREA.com, 2/6).

MSG Reports Increased Cash Flow Thanks To Media, Sports Segments

The Madison Square Garden Company (MSG) today reported Q2 revenues of $387.9M, up 4% from the year ago period, and credited the MSG Media segment for the increase. Adjusted operating cash flow was $108.3M, up 37%, with improved results in the Media and MSG Sports segments partially offset by a decrease in MSG Entertainment. Results were affected by the Rangers not playing amid the NHL work stoppage and also by the Knicks' return to a full-season schedule (MSG).

Cubs Launch Contest To Design "Wrigley Turns 100" Logo

The Cubs today announced the launch of the "Wrigley Field Turns 100 Logo Contest," with the winning logo to be featured at the ballpark, on merchandise and memorabilia, and possibly on the '14 Cubs uniforms. The winning designer and a guest will receive a flight and accommodations in Chicago to be feted in an unveiling event prior to a late-summer home game. The prize package also includes two tickets to the game and a personalized '14 jersey (Cubs).

Cubs Senior Dir of Marketing Alison Miller said, "There will be a gallery feature so you can see what other people posted. We will be able to filter all those and see them. We have a team that is planning all the 100th activities and we will vet down the top three to five finalists" (REDEYECHICAGO.com, 2/6).

Chris Welton, Terrence Burns Leave Helios To Join Advisory Firm Teneo

By Tripp Mickle, Staff Writer

Longtime Helios Partners CEO Chris Welton and President Terrence Burns left the agency last month to join Teneo, a N.Y.-based firm that advises companies, non-profits and governments. Teneo is led by Declan Kelly, the former U.S. Economic Envoy to Northern Ireland, and Welton and Burns are the third sports execs to join it in the last six months. Former Breeders Cup President Greg Avioli was named Teneo Managing Dir last year. A Teneo exec declined to say whether or not the agency planned to launch a sports practice. Helios did not return calls seeking comment. Helios Partners’ Chris Renner, who has led the agency’s European operation in Paris, has been named its CEO. Helios COO Chris Sanders is still with the agency. The agency’s top clients are IOC TOP sponsor Dow and ESPN, which hired the agency to assist on its development of the global X Games.

With the departure of both Burns and Welton, Helios loses two of its most established and connected leaders. The duo had been working on the Olympics since the '96 Atlanta Games and later led Meridian Management SA, which oversaw sponsorship sales for the IOC from '96-'04. Burns left Meridian in '03 to create Helios. Welton and Renner joined the agency in '06. The Amaury Group, a French media company that organizes the Tour de France, took a controlling interest in Helios in the summer of '08. Around The Rings first reported Welton’s and Burns’ departures.

Rockies Investor Linda Alvarado Bullish On State Of MLB Economics

Rockies investor Linda Alvarado appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” this morning and discussed the current state of MLB. Alvarado: “The industry is doing well. Part of it is the affordability of our tickets in baseball as opposed to other sports. But more than that, it’s the ability for teams to continue to compete. In that context, when you look 20 years ago, when we became an expansion team with the National League, the revenue was $1.5 billion. We set records last year (with) $7.5 billion and yes, while there's revenue sharing, it is economic development for the areas, the communities and the cities where we operate, so it's not just about baseball teams. So we continue to do well” (“Squawk Box,” CNBC, 2/6).

Cable TV Business Helps Time Warner Post Strong Q4 Income

Time Inc., which publishes SI, "continued to weigh on the company's overall results" (NYTIMES.com, 2/6).
