LPGA Approves Lexi Thompson's Petition For Early Membership

LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan Friday approved 16-year-old golfer Lexi Thompson's petition to allow her "to receive membership next year on the LPGA." Whan said of Thompson, who earlier this month won the Navistar LPGA Classic: "Her ability to handle the success and disappointment inherent to this game testifies to a level of maturity that I believe makes her capable of handling the emotional rigors of professional golf." LPGA age restrictions require golfers between the ages of 15-18 to "petition for early membership consideration" (CBSSPORTS.com, 9/30).

Shortly after the announcement, Thompson took to her Twitter feed: "Sooo Happy :) Thx for all of the Support! Excited to be a full @LPGA member!!!" CBSSports.com's Steve Elling: "The Lexi tweet is funny. Her age is evident in the number of exclamation points used in two sentences." GolfChannel.com's Jason Sobel before the decision tweeted, "Mike Whan would do some good PR for himself if he makes announcement in a 'Let Lexi Play' t-shirt." Golf World's Ron Sirak: "By granting Lexi membership beginning in 2012, she misses no tournaments. Was not in Asia events and will play Titleholders."

WNBA Sponsors Activating Around League's Championship Series

By Terry Lefton

WNBA sponsors are lining up activation plans behind the league's championship, which begins Sunday between the Atlanta Dream and the Minnesota Lynx. Boost Mobile, which signed this summer as the league's "marquee partner," while parent Sprint took wireless rights for the NBA, is presenting partner for the finals. Both teams will wear Boost logos on their uniforms as they have done since the deal was finalized. Boost is sponsoring a “WNBA Top 15 Moments" program, a selection chosen by fan vote to honor the league's 15th anniversary. adidas will host its "Basketball Finals Nights" during Game 2 in Minnesota and Game 3 in Atlanta, and give fans wearing local youth basketball apparel to the game free T-shirts.

EA Sports' “The Sims Social” will be presenting live chats for fans with select players from the Dream and Lynx. EA Sports also hosted a "Prove Your Fandom Playoffs Challenge" contest where fans were able to upload photos of themselves demonstrating their passion for the WNBA. The winner of this contest, as determined by fan votes, gets a trip for two to a Finals game. Jamba Juice will continue to support "Team Up for a Healthy America" campaign, which encourages fans to submit their pledge to lead a healthy and active lifestyle and be entered to win a chance to win gift cards to NBASTORE.com and equipment for their schools and organizations. Sanofis Aventis' "Dribble to Stop Diabetes" program will present WNBA FIT Clinics in Minneapolis and Atlanta for 100 local children in each city during the week of the Finals.
