Vegas Golden Knights: NHL Expansion Team's Identity Revealed

The Las Vegas NHL team last night unveiled Vegas Golden Knights as the team name "amid fanfare at Toshiba Plaza as an estimated 5,000 people waited outside" T-Mobile Arena. Team Owner Bill Foley said that he "purposely left off the word 'Las' for the team name because he said locals call the town 'Vegas' and thought he could connect better with them." The Golden Knights will wear "black, gold, steel gray, white and red in their uniforms" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 11/23).

During the unveiling ceremony, a "video that was set to introduce the name failed to play, which set forth an audible" that saw Foley and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman "comment on the name and logo" (THEHOCKEYNEWS.com, 11/22). But "technological snafus aside, the celebration Tuesday was more impressive than most could have imagined, with long lines of folks hoping to purchase merchandise still swelling hours after the announcement" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 11/23).

Toronto FC-Impact Match Draws Capacity Crowd At Olympic Stadium

A "capacity crowd" of 61,004 was on hand at Montreal's Olympic Stadium last night as the Impact defeated Toronto FC 3-2 in the first leg of their two-game MLS playoff series. The scheduled start time of 8:00pm ET was "delayed a full 30 minutes" after the goal box was "deemed too small, sending stadium officials onto the pitch to paint new lines at both ends." That prompted Impact Owner Joey Saputo to "issue a public apology" in an interview with ESPN (MONTREAL GAZETTE, 11/23). The crowd was the "second largest for an MLS playoff game behind only the 61,316" at Gillette Stadium for the Galaxy-Revolution MLS Cup final in '02 (ESPNFC.com, 11/22).

Also last night, the Rapids-Sounders playoff game drew a crowd of 42,774 "poncho-wearing fans at rain-soaked CenturyLink Field." The Sounders won 2-1 (DENVER POST, 11/23).

LeBron James Gives Deposition In Lawsuit Involving Billy Hunter

LeBron James yesterday "missed Cavaliers practice to give a deposition in a lawsuit" involving former NBPA Exec Dir Billy Hunter. James, who serves as NBPA VP, was "one of several players deposed." Hunter "sued the union for wrongful termination" and is seeking $10.5M in salary and benefits. He also "claims he was undermined by the union" during the '11 lockout (AP, 11/22). James is "expected to start" tonight at home against the Trail Blazers (CLEVELAND.com, 11/22).

Jimmie Johnson Goes On "The Late Show" With Sprint Cup Trophy

NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson appeared on CBS’ “The Late Show” with the Sprint Cup in hand and talked about winning his seventh Cup championship. Host Stephen Colbert said the trophy  "would make a great murder weapon." Colbert: "No one would ever suspect, it's got a lot of sharp edges. Or it would be a great thing to hold your nachos in." Johnson said of his legacy, “It means so much to tie with the great icons of our sport. They’ve done so much for our sport and I still have a lot of years let to drive. Hopefully, I can create my own legacy and leave my own mark in the sport and help it grow to the next level as they did.” The show opened with Johnson and Colbert competing in an unusual foot race in the Ed Sullivan Theater. Watch video of the segment (“The Late Show,” CBS, 11/22).

Meanwhile, Hendrick Motorsports runs a full-page ad in today's Charlotte Observer congratulating primary sponsor Lowe's for backing Johnson: "One Driver. One Sponsor. One Team. SE7EN Championships" (THE DAILY).

Johnson also "filed a complaint against the NFLPA" with the Department of Labor "under the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act." Johnson to date has "served six games" and has "four games left on his suspension" (TWITTER.com, 11/22).

Women's Basketball Game Switches Venues Due To Power Outage

The Notre Dame and Louisiana-Lafayette women's basketball teams last night "switched venues in the middle of their game due to a power outage." The contest began at Houston's Campbell Center before "roughly 1,000 fans" when a power outage "caused a long delay in the second quarter." The "rest of the contest was played" at Rice Univ., "about a 30-minute drive away from the original venue." The teams bused to Rice and resumed play after a 2-hour, 35-minute delay. No. 1-ranked Notre Dame won 91-51 (AP, 11/22).
