Jurgen Klinsmann Under Scrutiny After USMNT Loss To Costa Rica

The USMNT last night lost a World Cup qualifier to Costa Rica 4-0, and U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati "certainly didn't give" manager Jurgen Klinsmann a "clear vote of confidence" after the match. Gulati: "We won't make any decisions right after games. We'll think about what happened today and talk with Jurgen and look at the situation. ... Today in particular was not a good performance." SI.com's Grant Wahl writes, "It's time for Jurgen Klinsmann to go." The U.S. was "not just beaten but overmatched against Costa Rica" (SI.com, 11/16).

YAHOO SPORTS goes with the header, "U.S. Soccer Must Move On From Jurgen Klinsmann Era." FOXSPORTS.com: "Klinsmann's Time Is Done." USA TODAY: "Klinsmann Can't Talk Way Out Of USMNT's Loss To Costa Rica."

Labor Talks Top Agenda At MLB Owners Meetings In Chicago

By Eric Fisher

Ongoing labor negotiations will be the focus as MLB owners meet today and tomorrow in Chicago. Owners also will explore potential further changes to instant replay rules and pace-of-play provisions. No major votes are expected, but the session will focus heavily on ongoing labor negotiations with the MLBPA. The existing five-year CBA expires Dec. 1, and while both sides continue to express optimism toward striking a new agreement, active talks are continuing into the final days of the current deal.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred at last week's GM meetings said, “There are a couple of natural deadlines. One is the beginning of free agency, the other, obviously, is the expiration date. We missed deadline one, so we’re looking at deadline two.”

Meeting Today Is Critical To NHL's Future Olympic Participation

NHL officials are meeting today in N.Y. with the IIHF, USA Hockey and the NHLPA in what "could be viewed as the last chance to save the NHL relationship with the Olympics." No decision is "expected to be reached until early January, but this meeting will offer insight into whether there should be any optimism this is going to happen." IIHF President Rene Fasel is "expected to offer a financial plan to offset costs of sending NHL players" (USA TODAY, 11/16). Read more about the NHL's ongoing talks with the IIHF and other stakeholders.

Fox Sports Hires Nike's Terri Hines To Run Communications Team

By John Ourand

Fox Sports hired Terri Hines from Nike to run its communications team. Hired as Fox Sports’ new Exec VP/Communications, Hines will be based in L.A. and will report to Fox Sports President Eric Shanks. The top item on Hines’ to-do list will be to hire a full staff, as Fox has seen many top communications execs leave the company during a year when Fox has the Super Bowl. Since the spring, execs with decades of communications experience have left the company, including Lou D’Ermilio, Dan Bell, Chris Bellitti, Ileana Pena, Elizabeth Conlisk and Emily Parker. Earlier this month, Exec VP/Communications & Integration Chris Hannan left for a job at WME-IMG.

In making the hire, Shanks looked outside sports TV. Hines had been VP/Global Communications for Converse and previously worked as communications director for Nike’s Jordan Brand. Hines officially starts Dec. 5.
