Arlington Voters Approve Public Funding For New Rangers Ballpark

Arlington, Texas, voters yesterday gave "overwhelming approval to public funding" for a $1B retractable-roof Rangers ballpark, with 60% voting in favor. That margin, if it holds, "would easily exceed" the 55-to-45% margin of victory in the election for AT&T Stadium. Going into Election Day, the "vote was considered close." The financial package includes "extending a sales tax and a hotel/motel tax" to pay as much as $500M toward a new facility next to Globe Life Park, which opened in '94 (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 11/9).

The election results kick off an "aggressive timeline to retire Globe Life Park and get the Rangers in a new ballpark no later" than '21 and "maybe as early" as '20. Also, the team today will launch a website to "get the public's input and ideas for the new stadium." The public bonds will be paid off over an estimated 30 years (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 11/9).

San Diego Voters Reject Chargers Stadium Ballot Measures

Ballot measures that "could have brought a combined convention center annex and Chargers stadium" to San Diego were "soundly defeated" yesterday. Measure C, which included a hotel tax increase sponsored by the team, was getting support from 41% of voters, "far short" of the 66.7% needed for approval. Measure D, which "also had a hotel-tax increase," was getting support from 40%. Chargers Owner Dean Spanos early this morning posted a letter to fans on the team's website "thanking all those who helped put Measure C on the ballot." Spanos wrote, "In terms of what comes next for the Chargers, it’s just too early to give you an answer" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/9).

Election Notes: Kaepernick Did Not Vote In Presidential Race

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick yesterday said that he did "not intend to vote in the presidential election." The controversial Kaepernick "previously voiced his displeasure with presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump after the first presidential debate in September" (ESPN.com, 11/8).

Meanwhile, several sports figures ran for office this election cycle. Former MLBer Frank White was "elected in his own right" as Jackson County (Mo.) executive, 10 months after he was "appointed to fill in temporarily" (K.C. STAR, 11/9). WWE entertainer Terrance "Rhyno" Guido Gerin failed to "end the Republican drought" in Dearborn, Mich., when he was defeated by a wide margin in the race for Michigan's 15th House District seat by Abdullah Hammoud (MLIVE.com, 11/8).

Illinois Pulls Football Games Against Northwestern From Soldier Field

Illinois AD Josh Whitman yesterday announced the "discontinuation" of games against Northwestern at Soldier Field, meaning the '17 and '19 contests "will now take place at Memorial Stadium in Champaign instead." Last year’s game at Soldier Field "fell flat, drawing an announced crowd of 33,514 two days after Thanksgiving to a venue that holds 61,500" (Champaign NEWS-GAZETTE, 11/10). The decision is a "complete reversal of a move" by former Illinois AD Mike Thomas to "raise the program's football profile in Chicago." But Whitman said, “Our intent is to play a major non-conference opponent at Soldier Field once every four years" (CHICAGOBUSINESS.com, 11/8).

LPGA To Name Toledo's Inverness Club Host Of '21 Solheim Cup

The LPGA today will announce that Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, "will host" the '21 Solheim Cup. Iowa's Des Moines Golf & Country Club will host next year's Solheim Cup, with Scotland's Gleneagles Hotel to host the '19 event (GOLFCHANNEL.com, 11/8). Several Toledo-area companies and "would-be sponsors have expressed an interest in the tournament, including Marathon," which could be the "title sponsor" of the event at Inverness (Toledo BLADE, 11/8).

Sony's PlayStation Vue OTT Service Losing Viacom Networks

Sony's PlayStation Vue is "removing all Viacom networks this coming Friday," marking a "serious setback" for Sony's OTT service. Sony is "hoping to fill the gap by adding NBA TV and BBC America this week." The service altogether is "losing more than 20 channels" (VARIETY.com, 11/8).

Meanwhile, Univision's broadcast and cable channels are now on the "list of services that AT&T will offer on DirecTV Now this month." The Spanish-language media company said that Univision, its local stations, UniMas, Galavision, Univision Deportes Network and Fusion will be "among the 100-plus channels that AT&T says it will provide" (DEADLINE.com, 11/8).
