Pistons To Announce Move Into Red Wings' Little Caesars Arena

Sources said that the Pistons today will announce "their return to downtown Detroit" in a news conference set for 3:00pm ET at Detroit Cass Technical High School. Pistons Owner Tom Gores, Ilitch Holdings President & CEO Chris Ilitch and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will be in attendance. The Pistons plan to move into Little Caesars Arena, which is "scheduled to open next fall." The Pistons "would begin play there" in '17-18 (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 11/22).

Raiders Top Texans In Front Of Partisan Crowd In Mexico City

The Raiders defeated the Texans last night, 27-20, in front of a "Raiders-heavy crowd of 76,473" in Mexico City (S.F. CHRONICLE, 11/22). Estadio Azteca last night was "blanketed in black" for the Raiders (USA TODAY, 11/22). The game, "originally scheduled" for Oakland Coliseum, "featured Raiders music during stoppages and frequent 'Rai-ders!' chants." While the atmosphere "was electric, the field was a bit slippery leading to some falls." The high elevation -- 7,380 feet above sea level -- also "played a factor." Meanwhile, the Mexican crowd "used a homophobic chant on kickoffs" that has previously prompted FIFA to discipline Mexico's soccer federation (AP, 11/22).

Texans QB Brock Osweiler during the game was "targeted with a laser pointer by fans." Several green flashes appeared on the field, and replays on ESPN's "MNF" telecast "showed that Osweiler was hit in the face several times." NFL security staff "hit the stands at halftime, hoping to find the culprit and remove him or her from the stadium, but the green flashes were still appearing in the third quarter." They occurred "only when the Houston offense was on the field" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 11/22).

Goodell Plans On Bringing More NFL Games To Mexico Going Forward

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday said that he is "optimistic the league will return to Mexico City in the years ahead, adding that the league will "evaluate the entire experience before making a decision." Goodell: "This is a priority for us. We see the passion that's happening here and the fan's interest in this game continues to explode. We want to feed that." Goodell indicated that the league's plans "will not be impacted by President-elect Donald Trump's previous comments on Mexicans" (ESPN.com, 11/22). Meanwhile, Goodell prior to the game "met on the field" with Raiders Owner Mark Davis (S.F. CHRONICLE, 11/22).

Gulati To Address Klinsmann Firing Today, Could Name Arena Successor

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena is "expected to replace Jurgen Klinsmann as manager of the U.S. men's national soccer team." The announcement could come as soon as today, as U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati is "slated to hold a conference call with the media" this afternoon to "discuss the direction of the national team following Klinsmann's departure." Arena served as the USMNT coach from '98-'06 and has won three MLS Cups since becoming manager of the Galaxy in '08 (SI.com, 11/21). Gulati today is likely to "get a grilling about what factors went into the decision to dismiss Klinsmann now, and whether Gulati's own reputation is at stake because of it" (PHILLY.com, 11/21).

Critics on social media yesterday "quickly vented their view" that Arena would be "an unimaginative and backward-looking choice" for U.S. Soccer (USA TODAY, 11/22).

Las Vegas NHL Expansion Franchise Set To Unveil Team Name, Logo

Las Vegas’ NHL expansion team tonight will reveal its name and logo, and it is “expected to be some variation of Knights, with Desert Knights, Silver Knights and Golden Knights the mostly likely choices.” Team Owner Bill Foley will “appear alongside” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman at Toshiba Plaza outside of T-Mobile Arena for the 5:30pm PT announcement (LAS VEGAS SUN, 11/19). Admission to the event is free and includes “entertainment from Cirque du Soleil.” It is also “the first chance to purchase official team merchandise,” as the team’s store at the arena “will open its doors following the conclusion of the ceremony.” Team VP & CMO Nehme Abouzeid said, “We’re hoping a few thousand people show up.” The ceremony will be televised on NHL Network and streamed on NHL.com (REVIEWJOURNAL.com, 11/21).

Today’s unveiling is “so critical in developing a fan base.” That is why team execs are “turning it into a celebration of sport and team.” It is “all part of Foley’s plan to get locals to support his franchise.” From “all accounts, Foley has been first-class each step of the way” (LAS VEGAS SUN, 11/22).
