Sources: DC United, District Finalize Stadium Development Deal

Sources said that DC United ownership and Mayor Muriel Bowser "have finalized a stadium development deal to keep the team in DC provided that the District government secures the needed land by Sept. 30." Officials said that Bowser is expected to announce the deal today. Still in play is the "basic deal" in which the District would pay $150M to acquire land on Buzzard Point, with the team to then "privately finance a stadium of around 20,000 seats" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/9).

Report On Boston 2024 Recommends New Public Commission

A report released today finds that "state lawmakers should establish and fund a new public commission with the power to impose binding conditions on Boston's Olympic bid, and the responsibility of overseeing a vast planning effort to guide the long-term legacy" of the '24 Games. The three-month study was led by Boston's Metropolitan Area Planning Council and touches on transportation, housing and the environment. It "acknowledges potential benefits and possible harms of hosting the Games, but does not directly take a side" over "whether the city should get behind" the bid (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/9).

Beijing, Almaty Bids Make Case To IOC For '22 Winter Games

Leaders for the '22 Winter Games bids from Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan, today "were making private presentations" to about 85 IOC members in Lausanne, Switzerland. Each city "was given 45 minutes to explain their bid plans, with another 45 minutes allotted for questions and answers" (AP, 6/9). An IOC Evaluation Commission report indicates Beijing "would have to make virtually all of its snow from scratch at distant venues." Almaty "will be betting on an unsteady economy that relies heavily upon oil" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/9).

Condition Of Fan Hit By Bat At Fenway Park Upgraded To "Fair"

The condition of Tonya Carpenter, the woman hit by a broken bat at Fenway Park on Friday night, “has been upgraded to fair.” The Red Sox yesterday said Carpenter’s well-being is "forefront in our minds." In the wake of Carpenter's injury, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that the league “will re-evaluate fan safety at stadiums” (AP, 6/8).

Prior to the start of last night’s MLB Draft, Manfred said, “When you have an incident like this, you have to go back and re-evaluate where you are on all of your safety issues. Trust me, we will do that – just like we are on a variety of issues right now at the beginning of my tenure.” He said the review process will involve all 30 clubs and likely the MLBPA. But he stopped well short of specifically promising increased netting at ballparks (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

I don’t know how. It’s an amazing horse. … Bad news is that he forgot to wear his FitBit to see how many calories he burned. … American Pharoah is the first horse since 1978 to win the Triple Crown, or as his brother who pulls a carriage in Central Park put it, ‘Oh great, another proud moment for Pharaoh. Whoop-de-doo. Tavern on the Green, coming up. Let’s go.’” More Fallon: “The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors in overtime to tie the NBA Finals at one game apiece. LeBron said it was a huge win and he couldn’t have done it without the ball” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 6/8).

Triple Crown winning jockey Victor Espinoza appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” and he raced Fallon on “mini-horse motorcycles” through the studio going for the “Quadruple Crown.” Fallon said of the small motorcycles, “It’s not fair that you can actually fit on this thing” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 6/8).
