UAB President To Lay Out Costs Of Bringing Football Back

UAB President Ray Watts today will likely announce that school donors must commit at least $17M for "operational expenses associated with football and the costs of bringing it back." That number "continues to creep up but appears close to being met." Watts also will argue that an additional $13M for "football facilities must be committed, because UAB itself won't spring for it." The "question now is how much of that 'facilities' money is enough" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 5/31).

AT&T Byron Nelson Draws Strong Attendance Despite Texas Rains

The PGA Tour AT&T Byron Nelson wrapped up yesterday, and attendance fell "just shy of last year's" despite a week in which "nearly six inches of rain fell" at TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas. The tournament total was 260,000, down from 270,000 in '14. The Sunday turnout was 72,000, up from last year's 65,000 (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/1). With hometown favorite Jordan Spieth in the field, "thousands lined the gallery ropes, some two- and three-deep." Tournament Dir Jon Drago said that during the final round, the event "had not parked this many cars since perhaps 2008" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 6/1).

Lightning In Stanley Cup Final Forces Garth Brooks Cancelation

Multiple Garth Brooks concerts at Amalie Arena have been canceled due to the Lightning reaching the Stanley Cup Final. The Lightning host the Blackhawks on Wednesday and Saturday for Games 1 and 2. Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were "supposed to play three shows" – one Friday and two Saturday. Arena and concert officials "have known for more than a week that this was a possibility." Organizers looked at moving the shows to Sunday, but Brooks in a statement said the logistics would raise "serious safety concerns" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/1).

MetLife Stadium Installs Walk-Through Metal Detectors At All Gates

MetLife Stadium starting this week "will use walk-through metal detectors at all gates." There will be "no more wanding or pat-downs," unless there are "extenuating circumstances." The magnetometers are "similar to those used by TSA officials at airports, except that fans don't need to remove their shoes or belts." Tests by security staff show that "the entry flow should be smooth sailing" (AP, 6/1).

NFL To Announce Plans For Exhibition Games In New Zealand

New Zealand is "set to get its first taste of the NFL early next year," as the league on Wednesday is expected to confirm plans for two exhibition events. Douglas Webber Events is "behind the venture," which would feature one game at Auckland's Eden Park and another at Wellington Regional Stadium. The "ground-breaking concept," featuring players cut from teams' final rosters, is "likely to be called the Southern Bowl" (STUFF.co.nz, 5/31).

WSOP's "Colossus" Event Shatters Record With 22,374 Entrants

The World Series Of Poker's "Colossus" event has "smashed the record for the largest live tournament in history." The $565 buy-in No-limit Texas Hold ’em tourney drew 22,374 entrants at the Rio Convention Center, "easily surpassing the 2006 Main Event, which held the old mark with 8,773 entrants." The "Colossus" opened Friday morning, with the final table slated to begin tomorrow. The winner will earn $638,880 (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 6/1).

Ft. Lauderdale Hosts Season-Opening Red Bull Rallycross Event

Red Bull Global Rallycross kicked off its 12-stop season yesterday at Bahia Mar hotel, marking the "first time Fort Lauderdale hosted such an event." Driver Ken Block said, "It's a beautiful city, a beautiful location for this. I just wish there was a bit more room for us to have a bigger track." Event COO Chip Pankow: "We had a great crowd, and the operations plans that we developed in concert with the City of Fort Lauderdale were successful regarding traffic, parking and crowd management" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 6/1).

HBO's John Oliver Talks FIFA Scandal, Addresses Sponsors Directly

HBO’s John Oliver last night tackled the FIFA scandal, saying, “What an appalling organization FIFA is. ... Despite being almost the dictionary definition of corruption, they’ve escaped any significant prosecution for decades, but that all ended on Wednesday.” Oliver: “It took the country that cares the least about football to bring down the people who have been running it. That’s like finding out that Kesha arrested a group of bankers involved in commodities fraud.” But “maybe the most remarkable thing about all the charges is they didn’t touch” FIFA President Sepp Blatter. Oliver added, “The problem is, all the arrests in the world are going to change nothing as long as Blatter is still there, because to truly kill a snake you must cutoff its head, or in this case its asshole.”

Oliver: “Barring an indictment, the only people with the power to get rid of Sepp Blatter are FIFA’s sponsors … and I would like to make a plea to them tonight. Please make Sepp Blatter go away. I will do anything. addias: I will wear one of your ugly shoes. ... McDonald's: I will take a bite out of every item on your dollar menu, which tastes like normal food that was cursed by a vindictive wizard. ... Budweiser: If you pull your support and help get rid of Blatter, I will put my mouth where my mouth is and I will personally drink one of your disgusting items. ... I will even drink a Bud Light Lime” (“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” HBO, 5/31).
