NFL Shortening Window For Teams To Submit Relocation Bids

By Daniel Kaplan

The NFL today at the league meetings in S.F. plans to tell owners that the period for submitting relocation bids is going to shrink from six weeks, and that the time period could still move up from the current Jan. 1 start date, a source said. The NFL L.A. owners committee plans to meet next month, with a full owners meeting possible in August, as the pace is quickening dramatically in the league's two-decade quest to return to the nation’s second most populous city. Currently, teams have from Jan. 1-Feb. 15 to submit relocation bids. Now, that period will be shrunk, and possibly moved into December. A full owners meeting to vote on a relocation bid would then come early in the new year.

The prospective summer owners meeting would largely revolve around the proposed St. Louis stadium, which is further along than the efforts in California. Whether that meeting occurs depends in part on progress in St. Louis, and the recommendation of the L.A. committee. A league source said of this week’s San Diego stadium task force stadium proposal, that if the mayor’s office sees it as an outline, the league can work with the city. But if it is seen as a proposal, that is a nonstarter, this source said.

MLB Holding First Owners Meeting With Manfred As Commissioner

By Eric Fisher

MLB owners today begin a two-day quarterly meeting in N.Y., marking the first set of owners meetings since the formal installation of Rob Manfred as Commissioner on Jan. 25. No major action items are expected. But owners are likely to formally ratify the league's recent multiyear contract renewal with Dish Network, and MLB's newly merged Business BOD will hear investment options for a potential spinoff of MLBAM's business supporting video streaming for outside entities.

This meeting will also see the full implementation of Manfred's reorganized board structure. In addition to that new Business BOD, Manfred created new panels for long-range strategic planning, chaired by Giants President & CEO Larry Baer, and for game presentation and media practices, to be led by Dodgers Chair Mark Walter. Manfred also has turned a special on-field committee created by predecessor Bud Selig into a fully fledged Competition Committee to be led by Phillies Chair David Montgomery. The new panels follow a realignment under Manfred of the league’s Exec Council, now chaired by Cardinals Chair & CEO Bill DeWitt Jr.
