DraftKings Signs Two-Year Deal As NHL's Daily Fantasy Game

By Ian Thomas

The NHL has signed a two-year North American partnership with DraftKings that makes the company the league’s official daily fantasy game. Financial terms of the deal, which is expected to be announced this week, were not disclosed. The deal gives DraftKings prominent brand placement across the NHL’s digital platforms, including NHL.com, the NHL mobile app and social media properties.

Additional activations include DraftKings serving as the presenting sponsor of daily video previews on NHL.com for regular-season games, fantasy segments on the NHL Network’s “NHL Live,” and dasherboard signs at NHL tentpole events such as the Winter Classic. Yahoo remains the league’s partner for season-long fantasy play.

NFL's Goodell, Waller Meet With U.K. MP On Placing Team In London

NFL Exec VP/Int'l Mark Waller today said he and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell were getting "a lot of good support" from the U.K. government about bringing a team to London following an early morning meeting with MP George Osborne. Last night's Cowboys-Jaguars game was the last of three in London this season, drawing a "total 250,000-strong crowd" and generating revenues of about US$5M per game. Waller: "We were talking about the progress we have made in the U.K., the growing fan base we've got and the increasing interest" (PA, 11/10).

Twins To Drop Pinstripes, Add Gold Trim For New Uniforms

The Twins today will announce that their players "will have a new, pinstripe-free look when they take the field for rookie manager Paul Molitor next April." Twins President Dave St. Peter said the new primary home uniform will be a "cleaner, more contemporary look with Kasota gold accents." He noted MLB "introduced the Kasota gold trim for the All-Star Game, and we really liked it. The color is symbolic of the sandstone that you see in Target Field, that comes from a quarry near Mankato" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 11/10).

NFL Reaching Out To LGBT Businesses For Super Bowl 50

The NFL and Super Bowl 50 organizers today will announce that the league "will expand its outreach on contracting opportunities for the 2016 event to businesses owned by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people." S.F., with its "rich history of gay-rights activism," will host the Super Bowl Village. The NFL "already targets small businesses owned by minorities, women and disabled veterans" as vendors around the Super Bowl. Companies that participate in the Business Connect program "don’t get preference in contract bids, but they learn about the procurement process for the Super Bowl and participate in networking" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 11/10).

Trail Blazers Honor Fan Who Collapsed During Game And Died

The Trail Blazers during last night's home game against the Nuggets honored Sandra Zickefoose, the woman who collapsed at last week's game against the Mavericks and later died. The team "created a custom white T-shirt in her honor," which features the "team's trademark pinwheel logo and her name, Sandy, printed in red." Players, coaches, ball boys, trainers and other personnel "were wearing the shirt hours before tipoff." The club also "placed a single red rose on Zickefoose's Moda Center seat in remembrance" (Portland OREGONIAN, 11/10).

Fresno State is looking to replace Thomas Boeh, who in August was reassigned by school President Joseph Castro "with three years remaining on his contract." Expansion Not On Agenda For Sun Belt Conference Presidents

Sun Belt Conference presidents are meeting today in New Mexico, and Commissioner Karl Benson said expansion is "not projected to be on their agenda." The conference "is staying put at 11" members for football and basketball. Sun Belt officials have "in the past discussed going to 12 across the board, largely for sensible-scheduling purposes and in part" so that the league "could consider hosting a conference football title game." But it has held off, "apparently feeling no jump-up-from-FCS-level candidate ... is ready yet" (Lafayette DAILY ADVERTISER, 11/8).
