"Electric" Atmosphere For LeBron James' Return To Cavaliers

The atmosphere at the sold out Quicken Loans Arena was "electric" for last night's Knicks-Cavaliers game, with "thousands of fans camped around just to get a taste" of LeBron James' return to Cleveland. The Knicks won 95-90. Notable attendees included Justin Bieber, Usher, Spike Lee, Michael Strahan, Kevin Hart, former NFLer Bernie Kosar and Browns QB Johnny Manziel and CB Joe Haden (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 10/31). The arena "had the atmosphere of a conference finals game." James, who "received roaring ovations throughout the night," brought back the "powder toss" pregame ritual (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 10/31). The decibel meter hit 102 in the "pumped-up pregame introduction" (CLEVELAND.com, 10/30).

Cleveland Plain Dealer, above the fold, “Everything But A Win” … Akron Beacon Journal, A1, “Long Wait Is Over” … Canton Repository, above the fold, “Party Spoiled” … Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, A1 top left, “A Jittery Beginning” … Willoughby News-Herald, above the fold, “Welcome Home.”

The team "battled glitches throughout the night," as "at least one quadrant of the humongous 5,500 square foot scoreboard went dark for part of the second half" (OHIO.com, 10/31). Early revelers "snarled traffic in the streets" around the arena four hours before tip-off, and "others charged $760 online for the cheapest seats" (Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE, 10/31). Tickets were listed "as high as $10,000 on FlashSeats.com" (OHIO.com, 10/30).

Santa Anita Hosts Third Consecutive Breeders' Cup This Weekend

Santa Anita Park today and tomorrow hosts the '14 Breeders' Cup World Championships, featuring 13 races with purses totaling $26M. The park also will host a Halloween event today on the infield. Breeders' Cup Senior Dir of Event Communications Jim Gluckson said, "What makes this special is that it's an international event. We have people from England, Ireland, France and Japan this year along with Hong Kong. ... There is also tremendous interest from South America" (SAN GABRIEL VALLEY TRIBUNE, 10/31).

Santa Anita is hosting the event for the third year in a row and eighth time overall, with next year's event scheduled for Kentucky's Keeneland Race Course, '16 back at Santa Anita and the '17 race headed to Del Mar. There has been "no mention of a return to the East Coast" despite Breeders' Cup President & CEO Craig Fravel's "stance that all major tracks will be considered for the future." Fravel: "It's awfully nice to be wanted, but you do reduce your weather risk a little bit by being here in Southern California" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 10/31).

Crowd Of 1 Million Expected For Giants World Series Parade

An expected 1 million Giants fans "will storm" S.F. today for a World Series victory parade. Public transportation options BART and Muni "will be adding extra service for hundreds of thousands of extra riders heading into the city," while "police are also adding extra patrols." The parade begins at noon PT. It will begin on Steuart and Market streets, culminating with a celebration at Civic Center Plaza and City Hall (NBCBAYAREA.com, 10/30).

An estimated 15,000 fans attended yesterday’s event at Kauffman Stadium to celebrate the Royals’ season (MLB.com, 10/30).

Officials Ramp Up Security For TCS New York City Marathon

City officials said that they "know of no specific threats" against Sunday's TCS New York City Marathon, but "promised security protections that will be as strong or stronger than those in place a year ago" for the first race after the Boston Marathon bombings. N.Y. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton: "Security was ramped up significantly last year. We have kept that level of security, and then some." About 50,000 runners are expected, and Bratton said that more than 4,000 officers "will be involved in providing security" (ESPNNY.com, 10/30).

Tata Consultancy Services touts its title sponsorship of the marathon with a full-page ad in the N.Y. Times: “Reimagining Possibilities. There Is A Certain Way” (THE DAILY).

Night Moves....Playing The Chalk

The first NFL report on ESPN was Panthers-Saints at 20 minutes into their broadcast. Last night's 11:00pm ET edition of FS1's "Fox Sports Live" led with the Royals addressing their fans at Kauffman Stadium, followed by Florida State-Louisville and Knicks-Cavaliers. ESPN's Keith Olbermann called out his "world's worst" persons in sports: The "staff accompanying the Florida State football team" telling a reporter not to take pictures of the team practicing in a public park in Louisville. Olbermann also criticized Chevrolet's Rikk Wilde for presenting World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner with a truck and looking like "he was about to cry," and LeBron James deciding to "crowd source – allegedly – whether or not he resumes his old 'throw chalk in the air' ritual."

Laugh Track....Set This Town On Fire

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel: “The San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals in Game 7 of the World Series. ... It was a great game and of course after the game, fans in San Francisco celebrated as fans are known to do, by lighting their city on fire. I’ve never understood that. If your team wins, why not celebrate by destroying the other team's city? Don't do it to your own. … Meanwhile, LeBron James tonight made his triumphant return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. You know, four months ago everyone in Cleveland hated LeBron James. But that's all Powerade under the bridge now. Now everyone in Cleveland loves LeBron James, until he leaves again and then they will hate him again. LeBron has been in Miami and some people believe it will be difficult for him to adjust to a city without its own sound machine” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 10/30).

CBS’ David Letterman: “How about the San Francisco Giants and Madison Bumgarner? Here's how something can affect everything: Even when you don't think it might be the case. Because of recent disease and medical scares -- normally they spray each other with champagne, the winning team of the World Series -- last night they slathered each other in Purell. The San Francisco Giants had a huge celebration after they defeated the Kansas City Royals last night in Kansas City and when that was finished, they had another tribute to Derek Jeter" (“Late Show,” CBS, 10/30).
