Cubs To Introduce Joe Maddon As Manager; Twins Hire Paul Molitor

The Cubs today will formally introduce Joe Maddon as their new manager, the 54th in franchise history. This comes after the team issued a "carefully written news release outlining events" leading up to the hire of Maddon and the dismissal of Rick Renteria. The Cubs "stressed they were committed to Renteria until an opportunity to sign Maddon arose and went as far as to detail the ensuing developments, presumably to defuse any allegations from the Rays of tampering" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/1).

Meanwhile, the Twins tomorrow plan to introduce Paul Molitor as their new manager, according to a source, "barring a last-minute change of heart by Twins owner Jim Pohlad and the team's front office, or a snag in negotiations over financial terms and coaching staff" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 11/2).

Laugh Track....Cool Keith

ESPN’s Keith Olbermann appeared on CBS’ “Late Show” Friday night. Host David Letterman noted Olbermann hosts his own show on ESPN and is a "man with a tremendously large head." Letterman told Olbermann, "When I see your show, I'm always impressed. You do such a wonderful job, and every outlet now in the world has sports highlights. Nobody does sports highlights the way you do them and not only that, but insightful commentary. You apply some brainpower to the world of sports." Olbermann said, "Thank you. I have to do something with the very large head." Letterman later said, "I appreciate the thoughtful commentary because being smarter than I am, I look to you for what I'm supposed to think, how I'm supposed to feel." Olbermann: "That's a horrible, horrible mistake."

Letterman said, “They play games in London and they play at Wembley Stadium and they get 90,000 fans and I'm thinking they can't be English people. They have to be Americans visiting London. English people are accustomed to seeing soccer, their football, which is pretty much nonstop. Football, if you're at a live football game, it's maybe the slowest sport on wheels.” Olbermann: “If they didn't sell a lot of alcohol at football games, attendance would be 25 people" (“Late Show,” CBS, 11/1).

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “Happy Halloween, everybody. It seems like people are going all out with their costumes this year. In fact, last night the Cleveland Cavaliers went as the Knicks and it was just amazing to see that. That’s right, the Cavaliers lost their season opener against the Knicks last night in LeBron James' first game back in Cleveland. LeBron actually felt a little slow and awkward out there and he looked down and realized Dwyane Wade was still hanging on to him." Following his monologue, Fallon aired his weekly “Thank You Notes” segment. Fallon: “Thank you, the logo for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, for looking like if Pablo Picasso painted a Norelco electric shaver” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 10/31).

Friday's edition of NBC's "The Tonight Show" also featured Fallon airing his regular segment "Tonight Show Superlatives" with players from the Ravens and Steelers receiving awards (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 10/31).

The opening skit on this weekend's edition of NBC's "SNL" featured cast member Bobby Moynihan portraying New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie being interviewed on Fox News' “The Kelly File” about how to handle people infected with ebola and how to guard against the spread of the disease. Christie said, “My only job is to protect the the people of New Jersey and believe me, they need protection. Their immune systems are already under attack from tattoo infections, and tainted well vodkas, and jet fumes. By which I mean the stench of the New York Jets” (“SNL,” NBC, 11/1).
