NBC's Mark Lazarus: NHL Playoff Beards "Hurt Recognition"

NBC Sports Group Chair Mark Lazarus said that he has "lobbied the NHL and its players to end the tradition" of growing playoff beards. He added that the "excess facial hair hurts player recognition for fans, perhaps hindering the development of new stars during the highest-rated games of the season." Lazarus: "I know it's a tradition and superstition, but I think (the beards do) hurt recognition. They have a great opportunity with more endorsements" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 6/9).

NHLPA Working On Program To Help Players Continue Education

The NHLPA is "finalizing plans" on a program to "help current players return to school and prepare them for a multitude of issues they will face in transitioning from playing careers to retirement." The NHL and NHLPA have each pledged close to $1.5M "over the next three years to the pilot project, though it's unclear how much" of the $3M "will go to pay for tuition and other fees." The union hopes to begin the effort this fall "with at least 60 active players," and wants in time to "expand the program to include retired NHL players" (TSN.ca, 6/9).

Russell Westbrook's Company Launching NBA-Themed Frames

Thunder G Russell Westbrook's company Westbrook Frames "has partnered with the NBA to launch a new series" of eyeglass frames. The initial release features frames for the Cavaliers, Celtics, Clippers, Heat, Knicks, Lakers and Nets. They are available on the Westbrook Frames website for $145. Company co-Owner Marc Beckman, who also serves as Westbrook's marketing agent for fashion, said that designs for "all 30 teams" will be released "eventually" (AP, 6/9).

Meanwhile, EA Sports today announced that Westbrook will be the cover athlete for the "NBA Live 16" video game (EA).

ESPN Extends Dick Vitale's Contract Through '17-18 Season

ESPN today announced that college basketball analyst Dick Vitale has agreed to a contract extension that will carry him through the '17-18 season. The deal will add another season to Vitale's previous extension, announced in October. The '17-18 season will mark Vitale's 39th at the network. His duties will include calling the men's Final Four for ESPN Int'l. Today is Vitale's 76th birthday (ESPN).

ABC To Air Inaugural Celebration Bowl Featuring HBCU Teams

ESPN Events today announced that ABC will telecast the inaugural Celebration Bowl, which will be held Dec. 19 at the Georgia Dome. The game will showcase HBCU football by featuring the respective champions of the MEAC and SWAC.

Meanwhile, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has agreed to a multiyear extension of its deal to title sponsor the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. The game is one of 13 bowls owned and operated by ESPN Events (THE DAILY).

The Int'l Boxing Association (AIBA) today said that it has fired Exec Dir Ho Kim "with immediate effect." Kim "had held the job for eight years." Kim "has been replaced by his current deputy" (AP, 6/9).

The Pirates today announced a sponsorship deal with Pittsburgh-based Levin Furniture, which becomes the team's official home furniture and mattress supplier (Pirates).

Michelle Wie today was named an ambassador for PGA Junior League Golf (PGA).

NBC's Mike Emrick will receive the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting from WFUV Radio. WFUV-FM originates from Fordham Univ., Scully's alma mater (BROADCASTINGCABLE.com, 6/9).
