NBA Finals Game 1 Ticket Prices Set Record On Secondary Market

Tonight's Cavaliers-Warriors contest "has become the most expensive Game 1 on the resale market in NBA Finals history." Ticketmaster, the Warriors' official resale site, said the average price paid for a ticket is $1,023, while StubHub pegged the average price paid on its site at $1,535. That is "almost $1,000 more than what fans have paid for Game 1s over the past four Finals" (ESPN.com, 6/4).

Warriors, Cavaliers Link Finals Watch Parties To Charitable Causes

There are "dozens of game-watch parties around the Bay Area" for Cavaliers-Warriors NBA Finals Game 1. About 30 restaurants, bars and theaters "teamed up with the Warriors this season to host" watch events. The spots are "donating some of their drink and food earnings from the get-togethers to the Warrior Community Foundation, which in turn will give money to more than 40 local organizations" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/4).

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers will host watch parties at Quicken Loans Arena for their away games. However, "unlike previous rounds" of the playoffs, "watch party tickets for the NBA Finals will cost $5." All proceeds will go to Shoes & Clothes For Kids and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank (CLEVELAND.com, 6/1).

NFL To Hold Special Owners Meeting On L.A. Stadium Situation

By Daniel Kaplan

The NFL has set a special owners meeting on L.A. for Aug. 11. The purpose of the meeting, in part, is to update owners on the status of the St. Louis stadium project, which may at that time be far enough along for owners to consider. Rams Owner Stan Kroenke is proposing a new stadium in Inglewood, Calif., but the league’s relocation bylaws require him to negotiate in good faith before relocating. Owners also will get an update on local efforts in San Diego and Oakland. The Chargers and Raiders both describe their proposed stadium in Carson, Calif., as a fallback plan in the event stadium talks falter in their home markets.

The August meeting is in Chicago. Next week, the NFL L.A. owners committee meets in N.Y., with the three teams in play expected to be present.

Bucks' Arena Financing Plan Reportedly Caps Public Cost At $250M

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and legislative leaders today are expected to announce that the Bucks "would be on the hook for any cost overruns" for their proposed $500M arena, with the "public's share of the expense for the facility" capped at $250M. Sources said that the "final sticking points have been resolved," but the deal's "future is still uncertain" in the Legislature. The state would borrow $55M, and the Wisconsin Center District would issue $93M in bonds. The state also would funnel $80M to the arena over 20 years by "recovering Milwaukee County's uncollected debt." The city of Milwaukee would chip in $47M (JSONLINE.com, 6/4).

Astros To Demolish Tal's Hill As Part Of Minute Maid Park Renovation

The Astros today announced that the Tal's Hill feature in center field at Minute Maid Park "will be removed as part of a renovation project" that will cost more than $15M. Astros Owner Jim Crane: "We would use some of that space for additional concessions and fan-friendly areas." Funding for the project, scheduled to be completed in time for the '16 season, "will be handled" by the team. Ballpark landlord Harris County-Houston Sports Authority has given "preliminary approval." The team also plans to add a HOF (MYFOXHOUSTON.com, 6/4).

Boston 2024 Begins Overhaul Of Plans By Moving Sailing Venue

By Ben Fischer

The Boston Olympic overhaul has begun. The Boston 2024 Olympic bid committee today announced the first major change to its widely criticized plan for the Summer Games: shifting the sailing venue 60 miles south to Buzzards Bay in New Bedford, Mass. It previously had been slated for Boston Harbor. In announcing the change, officials promoted two themes that will be part of other venue decisions: temporary construction and lasting public benefits. The sailing venue plans call for a 10,000-seat temporary seating/medal stand area to be built at historic Fort Taber overlooking the bay, a project officials say would revitalize the entire property while minimizing long-term upkeep costs.

One of the original selling points for the Boston bid was its compact footprint, offering visitors and athletes the rare ability to walk between most venues. But amid intense local criticism over real estate plans and taxpayer-funded development, that vision is being reconsidered. On May 29, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker told reporters he expected that the bid group would abandon its original plans in favor of distributing venues throughout the state. The private nonprofit group promises many more changes to be published and a comprehensive revision to be finished by June 30.

U.S. Sens. Push To Stop DoD From Spending On Sporting Tributes

U.S. Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) are "making a push to stop the federal government from spending money" to honor veterans at sports events. Following a May report that the Dept. of Defense paid $5.4M to 14 NFL teams for "salutes to the military and other advertising," the senators today filed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for FY '16 that prohibits the DoD from "spending taxpayer dollars to honor American soldiers at sporting events" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/4).

Throwback Thursday: Slammin' Sammy's Fall From Grace

We launch a new feature with a look back to this week 12 years ago, when then-Cubs RF Sammy Sosa was ejected from a game for using a corked bat. Sosa, who the previous month had finished third in THE DAILY's MLB Most Marketable survey, soon saw his popularity and reputation questioned. However, like many of the other players associated with baseball's "steroid era," fan opinion on Sosa was not nearly as harsh as the media's take on his cheating. In one of the more bizarre aspects of the scandal, the AP's handling of one of Sosa's quotes prompted the MLBPA to encourage Hispanic players to answer questions in Spanish.
