Cavaliers-Warriors Game 2 Audience Best Since Jordan-Era Bulls

By Austin Karp

ABC last night aired the most-viewed NBA Finals Game 2 since Michael Jordan’s last trip with the Bulls in ’98. Cavaliers-Warriors Game 2, which like Game 1 went to OT, averaged a 10.5 fast-national rating and 18.8 million viewers. That figure is ABC’s best NBA Finals Game 2 audience since ESPN acquired league TV rights prior to the '02-03 season, and best for any Game 2 since Bulls-Jazz drew a 16.6 final rating with 26.3 million viewers on a Friday night in '98. Cavs-Warriors Game 2 is up 19% and 26%, respectively, from an 8.8 rating and 14.9 million viewers for Spurs-Heat Game 2 last year. The game also drew 704,000 unique visitors to WatchESPN, marking the app’s second-best NBA game on record after the '13 NBA Finals Game 7.

MLB Making Draft Increasingly TV Friendly For 50th Anniversary

MLB today through Wednesday is marking the 50th anniversary of its Draft, with MLB Network and MLB.com tonight covering the first 75 picks. There are "four prep prospects and 60 club reps scheduled to be in attendance" at Studio 42 in Secaucus, N.J. In addition, MLB.com has launched a Draft Tracker, a "live interactive app that includes a searchable database of more than 1,500 draft-eligible players with statistics, scouting reports and video highlights" (MLB.com, 6/8).

The N.Y. TIMES notes, "Unlike the made-for-television drafts in the NBA and the NFL, there is still some mystery that surrounds Major League Baseball’s draft despite this being the 50th anniversary" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/8).

IOC Adds Four New Events To PyeongChang Games Program

The IOC today agreed to add "four new events" to the '18 PyeongChang Games program: curling mixed doubles, speed skating mass start, big air snowboarding and a team event in downhill skiing. Big air snowboarding "will replace the snowboard parallel slalom" in a move agreed to by the FIS. The IOC in a statement said the new events will lead to a "projected increase in the overall female participation at the Olympic Winter games" (REUTERS, 6/8).

Horse Track Could Be Built On Land Owned By Under Armour's Plank

Officials with Kevin Plank's real estate firm, Sagamore Development, in an e-mail said "several people have shared with us" the idea of building a new horse track on land owned by the Under Armour Founder, Chair & CEO. But they added the track is "not currently contemplated in our master plan" for Port Covington in Baltimore, where Plank has more than 130 acres. Sagamore "did not specify who has been involved in the discussions." Plans unveiled for the area so far include a "new headquarters" for UA. This comes as the future location of the Preakness Stakes "remains in limbo" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/8).
