Power Players: Cathy Engelbert

Cathy Engelbert

Commissioner, Women’s National Basketball Association

The former Deloitte CEO is driving efforts to raise the global profile and value of the WNBA and its franchises. Engelbert led a $75 million fundraising round in February that brought on equity investors such as Nike and Condoleezza Rice, along with NBA and WNBA owners and many others. She continues to court deep-pocketed sponsors, including the league’s Changemakers program that has AT&T, Deloitte, Google, Nike and U.S. Bank as partners. Engelbert has welcomed new owners such as Mark Davis (Las Vegas) and Larry Gottesdiener (Atlanta) and talks of expanding to new cities, but only after the league’s economics are strong enough to support that move.
