Winning is all-the-time thing for the U.S. women’s team, both on and off the field. The players, who were present and active in negotiations and educated about the issues involved in collective bargaining, achieved their years-long effort to win equal pay. The players agreed to a $24 million settlement of their class-action, equal pay lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation in February and, led by union president Becky Sauerbrunn, signed a new collective-bargaining agreement last month that ensures they earn the same compensation as their male counterparts. As part of the new CBA, the U.S. men’s national soccer team agreed to pool FIFA World Cup prize money to achieve equal pay, becoming the first country in the world to do so and setting an example for how all athletes might work together.
