Akin Gump, in addition to representing the NFL for decades, has advised MLS in labor negotiations with the players’ union, NBA teams in player contract disputes, and college sports organizations on issues related to the employment status of college athletes. This past year, the firm represented the NFL in the dismissal of Philadelphia Eagles lineman Lane Johnson’s challenge to his suspension for violating policy on performance-enhancing substances, and defeating class certification in a case filed on behalf of retired players for damages allegedly caused by pain medications prescribed during their careers.
