The Atlanta Braves did not give out foam tomahawks and stopped use of tomahawk chop-themed graphics and music at Game 5 of their National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals out of respect for Cardinals pitcher Ryan Helsley, a member of the Cherokee Nation who earlier in the series had spoken out against how Native Americans are often perceived in sports.

Punishing heat kept attendance down and tempers high at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar, with French decathlete Kevin Mayer calling the event “a catastrophe.” The pressure was already on the tiny nation to pull off an effective World Cup in 2022, and this month’s event only raised doubts about whether that will be possible.

Call it a Draw

Amid a broader continued rise for the league, MLS’s end-of-year figures were mixed. Attendance reached an all-time total of 8.7 million, but per-game attendance was down 2.5%. Similarly, digital metrics jumped 27% year-over-year, while viewership on Fox Sports and FS1 slumped 23% vs. 2018.
