Worthwhile group outing to WNBA game inspired by SBJ column

This letter is in response to the Forum column “Strong opinions on what’s next for women’s sports” in our July 22 edition.

I really enjoyed your column on what’s next for women’s sports. This quote in particular stood out to me: “Whenever someone complains about equal pay or equal coverage, I respond with one simple question: When was the last time you paid for a ticket to a women’s event or watched a women’s event on TV? This entire movement toward equal treatment would be so much more achievable if people supported women’s sports with their own dollars and time.”

It inspired me to organize a trip for the NBC Sports Employee Resource Groups to attend a New York Liberty game. After the game, I hosted a Q&A with Liberty COO Keia Clarke, and we even got a photo on the court with Olympic champion Teresa Weatherspoon. Of the 30-ish people who went, only three (including myself) had ever been to a WNBA game. I am encouraged that so many of my colleagues, after being exposed to professional women’s basketball for the first time, said they wanted to go again.
