Gary Woodland made a name for himself at the U.S. Open, winning the tournament at Pebble Beach at 13-under par and giving Wilson’s golf division its first major title in 11 years. The 35-year-old Woodland, who played college basketball at Washburn before transferring to Kansas to focus on golf, signed a multiyear, 10-club deal with Wilson in January.

The Tampa Bay Rays were given permission by Major League Baseball to explore splitting future seasons between the Tampa area and Montreal, which lost the Expos to Washington, D.C., before the 2005 season. The deal would require new stadiums in two cities that have not been able to get baseball facilities built and would not satisfy either potential fan base.

Raising Arizona

The NHL approved the sale of the Arizona Coyotes to billionaire entrepreneur Alex Meruelo, who is thought to be the first Latino majority owner in the NHL. The organization has been in a state of disarray for years off the ice, and its future in the Phoenix area remains uncertain without a new arena, a stance reiterated by commissioner Gary Bettman.
