Celebration of Service

Courtesy of PowerPlay NYC

PowerPlay NYC

Using sports as a unifier, PowerPlay NYC advances the lives of inner-city girls ages 8-18 through a year-round offering of youth programs. The group partners with schools and community-based organizations to conduct after-school and summer programs and fills a critical service gap for girls of color living in poverty.

Through its STARS Series After-School Program, RisingSTARS Leadership Academy and SuperSTARS Leadership Academy, PowerPlay serves over 1,800 participants across all five boroughs annually by teaching fundamental sports and leadership skills and healthy living habits.

In 2018, PowerPlay was selected for the fifth consecutive year as the lead organization of the STARS (Sports Training and Role Models for Success) Citywide Girls Initiative. This group of nine partners works together to help girls across NYC with deeper services to overcome barriers to success; grow emotionally, academically and physically stronger; and develop as leaders in their communities.

This is the third year that SBJ has recognized an entity for its Celebration of Service. The Homeless World Cup and PeacePlayers International are previous recipients of the honor.
