Youth coaching column strikes a chord

Looking through SBJ I saw [John Ourand’s youth coaching] article and, because of my own experiences, I had to read it.

I’ve been working in the NBA for the last 30 years and worked in college basketball before that. I have had the good fortune to coach in the NIT and NCAA tournaments along with coaching in the NBA playoffs and even an NBA All-Star Game — all as an ASSISTANT coach.

Who I really am as a coach is the head coach of the Marist Academy girls junior high basketball team. I coached my daughter’s team for two years and it was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had. The connection with her and the other girls on the team was so much fun. I could go on and on about those times but won’t. Just wanted to say to you that reading your story warmed my heart. Made me miss those days (and it was a long time ago — my daughter just turned 28 — yikes!)

You’re a lucky man to have had the experience of coaching your kids, and your kids are even more lucky to have a dad like you who took that time for them.

Enjoy your retirement from coaching. :)

I Really enjoyed [John Ourand’s] write-up on coaching your kids. Good timing as I’ve been behind on catching up on SBJs and just capped off coaching my 10-year-old son’s championship flag football team. I’ve been coaching basketball, volleyball and flag football for over 5 years now and wouldn’t trade those moments for the world. So many small moments to remember and I know that the time is fleeting so I enjoyed your perspective, especially over the importance of winning for the kids. They do want to win, but it’s certainly not as important as it is for a majority of the parents and coaches. I frequently remind myself as well as some of the parents, it’s all about the fun. Take care and enjoy those memories and thanks for passing along your wisdom.
