NBA's gender equality in spotlight

New initiatives at All-Star aim to advance gender equality efforts

NBA All-Star weekend in Charlotte will see some new gender and inclusion initiatives, including the FQ Equality Lounge, a forum for women to connect and collaborate, according to the league.

The FQ Equality Lounge will be located at the WeWork space in uptown Charlotte and feature a variety of gender equality and inclusivity discussions, panels and activations from Feb. 15-17.

The effort is led by The Female Quotient, which works with companies to develop equality in the workplace. The Female Quotient is partnering with the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets, Jordan Brand, American Express and Bank of America on the event.

“It is a space for people to activate change together,” said Kelly Flatow, NBA senior vice president of global events. “There are a broad range of topics.”

Along with the FQ Equality Lounge, the NBA on Feb. 14 will host its Women in Basketball Operations forum at the Marriott City Center. It is the second forum for women in basketball operations recently held by the league. The forum aims to develop leaders and expand the pipeline of female talent in basketball operations roles.

The event will feature several panels and development sessions and comes as part of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s effort to develop more women in leadership roles within the league.
