You had me at headlock: What drew Jeanie Buss to Women of Wrestling?

I was surprised to see that Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss was involved with the launch of an updated version of GLOW, the “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.” The campy wrestling series from the 1980s has attracted renewed interest, thanks to a popular Netflix series and a new round of matches that debuted last week on AXS TV.

I recently caught up with Buss, who is a co-owner in the new Women of Wrestling organization, and asked how she got involved with the venture. She spoke of working with the founder of the original GLOW, David McLane, more than two decades ago when they both were involved in professional roller hockey.

When McLane told Buss about his plan to revive the brand, she initially was hesitant.

“I had never seen women’s wrestling in person and once I went to see it, I fell in absolute love with it,” Buss said. “I was proud because women were the feature. They got the center stage. They weren’t the undercard match. These were strong female characters. …

“I spent many hours talking to David about how much it resonated with me as a woman in sports. … I just felt that the time was right. This is a passion project for me.”

WOW, which has made its debut on AXS TV, is building off the GLOW franchise of the 1980s and the popular Netflix series on women’s wrestling.wow holdings llc
