The Philadelphia Flyers introduced Gritty, the team’s first mascot since the 1970s, on Sept. 24. Initial reaction was shock and horror, which only endeared him further in the hearts of Philadelphians. Before long Gritty was a regular feature of memes, political signs, proclamations and, of course, Flyers games.

Colin Kaepernick was the face of the NFL kneeling controversy, and Nike created the biggest sports marketing story of the year by using the former NFL quarterback in a brand campaign that debuted Sept. 6. President Donald Trump and others were livid, but Nike’s stock hit an all-time high.
