Chris Myers shares take on sports media

Chris Myers quietly re-upped with Fox Sports, signing a multiyear extension to remain on Fox and FS1. Terms were not released, but the deal lasts for more than three years. Myers is repped by WME’s Jordan Bazant.

Myers, who joined Fox Sports Net in 1998 from ESPN, has been a big presence on the network’s NFL, NASCAR and MLB coverage. He has been the host of Fox’s pre-race show “NASCAR Sunday” since the network picked up NASCAR rights in 2001. He also has worked as a sideline reporter on both NFL and MLB games. I reached out to Myers via email to get his thoughts on the business.

How can NASCAR change its ratings performance?

Myers: NASCAR provides some of the best access for its broadcasts and fans. If NASCAR starts the season in February and finishes it in September, it would help make the races more appointment viewing. There should be one start time for all day races and one start time for all night races.

How can the NFL change its ratings performance?

Myers: The NFL is always a ratings winner. With even more games beyond Sunday, it may slice up the viewing pie a bit. But NFL games still out-rate all other programs. The NFL has to be careful. Don’t drag the game down with too many penalties and slow replay reviews. It also needs to avoid any kind of labor dispute or work stoppage; that possibility looms in the near future.

Why did you re-up with Fox?

Myers: Fox is where I’ve been and wanted to stay. It’s a good feeling when you really like the people you work for and with. I spent a decade at ESPN in its golden years. I’ve been with Fox almost twice that time. Live TV is what I live for, which is why sports broadcasting is so special. Live game and live events will never go out of style.

What is the market like for on-air reporters?

Myers: The market is as good as it’s ever been for sports broadcasters with so many team broadcast channels and competing 24-hour sports cable channels. If you work hard and get along with people, you’ll usually have a job.

How do you use social media?

Myers: Social media is a valuable tool, but it’s important to know the source and not got caught up in over-reaction.

What advice would you give to someone who’s just getting started in the business?

Myers: Start as early as possible. Start out as versatile as possible until you find your strength or someone helps you find it. Follow your dreams. Be on time. Get along with people. And do more than the job requires.
