Summer Plans

Executives in sports business share what’s on their itinerary for the summer months, including long-overdue vacations, catching up on reading and enjoying the nice weather with outdoor activities.

Frank Nakano
Managing Director of Sports & Entertainment Marketing | Chase Bank

Must Vacation: We traditionally spend time in Steamboat Springs, Colo., over the summer. A great little town where time slows down, weather is perfect and more often than not there’s a beautiful Alpenglow at dusk. My wife’s family lives there so it’s also a time to spend some family time together.

Must Reads: I’m really into a new series by Anthony Williams known as the “Medical Medium.” Like everything, (I enjoy) a good balance, so I jump between these books and Ray Dalio’s “Principles.” Simple format, often simple statements but with deep meaning and helps frame mindset, situation and approach.

Binge Watching: “The Americans” on FX. Love the complex storyline and nostalgia of ’80s clothing, music and political references. And there’s Kerri Russell. Focused, scary and believable in her role. I’m only on Season 2, don’t tell me what happens.

Must Do: First on the list is to finish the Handler course and certification for my furry son, Rocky, to be an official therapy dog. We are hoping to volunteer together in the community and provide joy to those suffering or in need. After years of work and an incredible first quarter of record-breaking numbers for the Super Bowl and Olympics, I look forward to dusting off my golf clubs and working on my handicap. The priority right now is to get fitted for new clubs. I am playing with my mom’s old Ping square-groove irons and it is time to get into the 21st century of golf technology.

Must Vacation: This summer, our family is visiting Chatham, Mass. (home of the Cape Cod League A’s!).

Must Reads: I just read “Take Off Your Shoes,” about how Ben Feder, the former CEO of Take-Two Interactive, left it all to take his family on a yearlong sabbatical to Bali. Brave, honest and beautiful. Peter Blauner is a fantastic crime fiction writer. His latest is “Sunrise Highway,” about a female NYC cop tracking a serial killer in Long Island.

Kim Stone
EVP, GM | Miami Heat and AmericanAirlines Arena

Must Vacation: Whistler, British Columbia, is my must-do every summer. We go hiking among the spectacular glaciers in the morning, mountain biking on their world-class courses in the afternoon and then enjoy a picnic dinner and concert at the outdoor amphitheater in the evening. The weather and scenery are a welcome break from the humid Miami summers.

Must Vacation: My family and I love Hawaii. There’s no better time to go than in September when the tourists start to thin out after Labor Day weekend, which worked out perfectly this year because we will be debuting our first AVP Pro Tour event in Hawaii from Sept. 14-16.

Must Do: Exercise (beach volleyball, boxing).

Must Vacation: Punta Cana. My wife and I have five kids total, with our oldest being a junior in college. Our second, who just graduated high school, asked for a family vacation instead of a party. This may be one of our last vacations with the entire family for a long time.

Binge Watching: I am an insane MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) fan and have set aside ample time this summer to watch the second season of “Luke Cage” on Netflix. My wife and I love “Big Brother,” so we’ll be watching that this summer, along with Season 3 of “Shooter.”

Sportscaster | CBS Sports

Must Vacation: Rehoboth, Del., with the kids.

Must Reads: Beachy fun reads like the “Crazy Rich Asian” series.

Binge Watching: “Younger.”

Must Do: Play golf.
